Uni of Queensland continue remarkable run
The University of Queensland claimed back to back victory against Bond University in the second leg of the Aon Uni 7s Series at Macquarie University today. The Queenslanders are yet to lose a game with 10 wins in a row as they continue their intimidating form in the competition.
It was a nail biting game as the teams took turns taking the lead for most of the match. Bond were up in the final minute 17-15, but UQ’s Van Wijnbergen came charging through and scored the winning try after the final siren which secured them a 22-17 victory.
In other results Griffith University claimed the Bronze Medal against Macquarie University 20-5 and University of Adelaide broke their own personal record taking Fifth Place in the tournament to University of Canberra.
Further down the ladder University of New England took out Seventh Place with the University of Tasmania taking eighth position.
University of Queensland Captain Mackenzie Sadler said: ‘’Tough game absolutely, we really had to work hard for it.
‘’Really pumped for next week to have all the people that have been supporting us this whole time be there. It should be a really good day.’’
Bond University and Aussie 7s player Charlotte Caslick said: ‘’Today’s standard was so much higher. I think as a group we played so much better as well. In saying that there’s still so many things we need to work on and I think playing together more often will definitely help that.’’
‘’It’s a four-series tournament and UQ obviously have four points up on us now so hopefully next week we can finish strong and win that early game in the final that would be ideal.’’
Australian University Sport CEO Don Knapp said: ‘’Each university’s student-athletes are showing solid performances with a marked improvement from round to round, but the University of Queensland asserted dominance in Round Two with another win following their Round One win in Launceston.
‘’The Series is gaining significant momentum as the teams modify their strategies and channel their focus towards the next leg of the Series.’’
The teams will travel to Brisbane for Round Three of the Aon Uni 7s Series which kicks off on September 16 at the University of Queensland’s home ground.
