New Zealand Schools have claimed the Trans-Tasman Shield for the third successive year, beating Australian Schools 32-8 at Ballymore Stadium in Brisbane.

Led by classy flyhalf Wiseguy Faiane, the visitors were on top from the opening whistle and scored two tries in each half to claim a dominant 24-point victory.

New Zealand dominated possession and territory in the opening exchanges and were unlucky not to score in the sixth minute from a cross field kick.

However it didn’t take long for the visitors to open their account, with Isaia Walker barging over from close range after 13 minutes.

Faiane added a penalty goal to extend the Kiwis lead to 10, but Australian scrum half Harrison Goddard quickly responded with a penalty goal of his own to take the score to 10-3.

After defending for most of the half, Australia worked their way down the field for the first time just before half time, but New Zealand caused a turnover at the breakdown and raced away to score against the run of play through Dalton Papalii, giving the visitors a 17-3 lead at the break.

Faiane added his second penalty goal of the evening early in the second half, before the front row pairing of Alex Fidow and Asafo Aumua combined to score a 60 metre try and extend New Zealand’s lead to 25-3.

The result was then put beyond doubt in the 65th minute, when New Zealand winger Sevuloni Reece kicked and regathered from inside his half before offloading to Tom Umanga-Jensen to score a brilliant try and seal the result.

Ryan McCauley crossed for Australia’s only try in the closing play of the match, but it was little but consolation as New Zealand claimed their third successive Trans-Tasman Test 32-8.
