Match Report: Australians Schools fight back in second half to beat Fiji Schools
Australian Schools have scored 29 unanswered points to claim a come from behind 39-17 victory over Fiji Schools in Auckland.
On a heavy track, the Fijians opened the scoring with a penalty goal and looked strong in the opening stages.
Australia’s set piece put them on the front foot and centre Nick Wilkinson quickly capitalised, throwing a nice cut-out pass to fullback Luke Osborne who scored the opening try.
The Fijians hit back soon after to regain a 10-5 lead, but Australia continued to attack.
Wilkinson linked with his Joeys teammate Matthew McTaggert and put Osborne in space, allowing the fullback to kick ahead for Gregory Terrace winger Will Eadie who regathered and scored to level things up.
But once again the Fijians responded, showing some impressive skills to score and take a 17-10 lead to the break.
Early in the second half, Shore lock Rory Suttor barged over from close range to reduce the deficit to just two points, before winger Yirrbi Jaffer-Williams took an intercept and ran 60 metres untouched to swing momentum firmly in the Australians favour.
Flyhalf Adam Doueihi added a penalty to give his side a 25-17 lead.
With the match still in the balance Will Eadie took control, scoring a further two tries to put the result beyond doubt.
The winger finished off a well worked team try first, before scooping up a loose ball on half way to score his third try of the afternoon and claim a 39-17 victory for the Australians.
Australian Schools play New Zealand Schools Barbarians on Monday and New Zealand Schools next Saturday.
