Fiji make four changes for Wallabies match
Fiji coach John McKee has made four changes to the side that fell short against England in the opening match of the 2015 Rugby World Cup, ahead of Thursday morning’s (AEST) clash against the Wallabies in Cardiff.
All four changes come in the forwards with hooker Sunia Koto, second-rower Apisalome Ratuniyawara and No. 8 Sakiusa Matadigo replaced by Tuapati Talemaitoga, Tevita Cavubati and Netani Talei respectively.
“We have made some changes to our forward pack which were pre-planned, to make sure we get a number of fresh players into the line-up but keeping the continuity with the core of our team.”
Despite a disappointing performance in his World Cup debut, former Waratah Ben Volavola has retained the No.10 jersey, with McKee looking for continuity ahead of his side’s second match in four days.
“In the end we have gone with the same backline combination. We believe by keeping the combination it will help us build on our performance against England.”
McKee admitted Fiji were overawed by the 84,000 fans at Twickenham, but said he thought the side would be better for the experience.
“Twickenham was a massive challenge for us take on (for the England match) with it being their home ground and doubling up as the opening game and ceremony.
“But our first game is behind us now and although we have another massive game coming up, we won’t have those first-game jitters.”
After keeping his cards close to his chest in the weeks and months leading into the World Cup, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika announced his side yesterday, opting for Will Genia at halfback and Michael Hooper and David Pocock in the back row.
“We suspected Australia would go with Hooper and Pocock in the back row,” McKee said.
“That was the combination that was so successful in the Bledisloe Cup game in Sydney just over a month ago, so they’ve gone with that again and it gives them good mobility in the back row.”
