Cheika makes 7 changes to Wallabies starting XV
Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has made seven changes to his starting line-up ahead of this weekend’s clash against Argentina in Mendoza.
Veteran prop Greg Holmes will start his first match for Australia since 2007, with Ben McCalman and David Pocock also named in the Wallabies starting XV.
In the backs, Nick Phipps and Matt Toomua replace the injured Will Genia and Matt Giteau, with Joe Tomane replacing Rob Horne on the wing.
Waratahs flyhalf Bernard Foley also comes into the starting side, replacing Quade Cooper at No.10.
The changes, indicating Cheika is eager to give a number of players an opportunity to impress ahead of the Bledisloe Cup.
“We are fortunate with the level of depth in the squad to be able to cover for the injuries we sustained last Saturday night against the Springboks,” said Cheika.
“They all deserve their start against Los Pumas and they now have an opportunity to build on the performance last week and stake their claims.
“We have two fine playmakers in Quade and Bernard. Both players can make an enormous impact on our team.”
Kurtley Beale will earn his 50th Test cap if he gets on the field on Sunday morning (AEST), with 31-year-old Dean Mumm and Nic White also added to an impressive Wallabies bench.
“We know Argentina will provide a physical challenge in this match, and our reserves will have a significant role to play,” Cheika said.
“Last week they (the bench) got us home against the Springboks, and I will be looking forward to an even a greater impact from our players entering game this weekend.”
