QLD GPS: Terrace benefit from cards in surprise win over Churchie
By ANT BRAND
Gregory Terrace are refusing to get carried away despite a positive 38-24 Round Six GPS First XV win over Churchie in a match riddled with send-offs and sin-binnings.
Churchie had two players red-carded and another yellow-carded during the clash, with Terrace also having a player sent to the bin for 10 minutes.
Gregory Terrace Head of Sport, Tyron Mandrusiak, said while he was happy to get the win, he was realistic about the influence Terrace’s send-offs had on the result.
“In fairness to Churchie they had a red card in the first 10 minutes or so,” he said. And then we had a Yellow Card and then they had a Yellow Card.
“They copped another red card as well so we were against 14 for a little while and then 13. But the boys played well.
“With First XV every weekend is like a grand final so just getting a win is a good thing. It gives the boys some good confidence leading into Brisbane Grammar School this weekend in our last home game.
“We aren’t overly happy but it’s a step forward.”
Severe winds didn’t hamper Terrace’s kicking game with Terrace flyer Campell King finding depth with the boot out of his own end and landing four conversions in a strong display.
“Campbell is a young 16-year-old winger and kicked really well for us,” Mandrusiak said.
“He’s got a soccer background but certainly he kicked really well for goal and it made the difference in tough conditions.
“To still score 38 points was pleasing and Churchie held on as long as they could with 13 men. But we kept things going and the ball stuck so we scored a few tries.
“It wasn’t anything to get too excited about but the boys are happy.”
In what was at times a fiery encounter, Mandrusiak said he was happy to come out of the match unscathed.
“There were no injuries so hopefully we keep this squad together for next week,” he said.
“You would be surprised with how many injuries you get with schoolboy footy so to come away like that is great.”
And with the most even GPS First XV competition is recent memory, Mandrusiak said the usual blowouts of years gone by were so far non-existent.
“The competition is tough and closer than it has been in the past which is great,” he said.
“BBC are on top of the ladder undefeated with TSS and then there’s Nudgee which is pretty normal.
“But they aren’t putting 70 on each team. Grammar nearly knocked TSS over on the weekend so it’s all pretty close and pretty healthy.”
In other results, Nudgee downed Toowoomba Grammar 43-14, Brisbane Boys College beat Ipswich Grammar 49-20, while The Southport School overcame Brisbane Grammar School 20-15.
