NSW Schools: CAS, ISA upstage GPS in round 4 of Inter Association trials
St Augustine’s have caused the upset of the 2018 NSW Schoolboy season, beating GPS powerhouse Scots 22-21 at Bellevue Hill.
After defeating local rivals Waverley a week earlier, Scots took plenty of confidence into the clash and opened the scoring.
But Auggies looked to disrupt the defending GPS premiers at every opportunity and halfback Freddie Lussick capitalised twice.
The nippy No.9 took an intercept and showed plenty of pace to score the visitors opening try and toed a loose ball through later in the match and regathered to score under the posts and give his side a 22-14 lead.
The Scots forwards rolled their way down the park and scored from close range soon after to reduce the deficit to just one point in the final minutes.
They attacked again off the back of an impressive driving maul in the 80th minute and looked capable of crossing again, but the backline got caught in centre field and were penalised for obstruction, handing Auggies an unlikely victory in the Eastern Suburbs.
At Hornsby, Barker also surprised many, beating Joeys 29-28.
In front of a big crowd, the two sides traded blows in a tight first half and Joeys went to the break up 7-5.
The Barker forwards looked to take control early in the second half and Billy Pollard and Luke Reimer both crossed to give the home side a 17-7 lead.
Joeys hit back soon after but Barker could smell an upset. Reimer crossed for his second before Jordan Cameron collected a perfectly placed grubber kick to dive over and give his side a 29-14 lead.
With their backs against the wall heading into the final 10 minutes, Joeys centre Dan O’Brien scored a brilliant individual try, before the visitors went the length of the field to score through Vincent Creagh and reduce the deficit to just one.
However Barker held their nerve in the closing stages and held on for a nail biting yet famous 29-28 win.
Elsewhere, Waverley got the better of Newington in the second half in a high scoring affair. Trinity beat Shore, Kings were too good for Stannies, Riverview beat Knox, St Greg’s beat TAS and Cranbrook defeated Grammar.
