GPS, Brothers and Wests close gap on competition favourites UQ

The University of Queensland’s 14-game unbeaten streak came to an end in Round 16 of the Hospital Challenge Cup, as GPS made a premiership statement against their fierce rivals at St Lucia.

A tightly contested opening half saw the sides head to the sheds locked at 7-all, before the Gallopers claimed the first three tries of the second stanza to open up a 28-7 lead.

The Students fought back late, but it wasn’t enough with GPS holding on to secure a 28-21 victory and bring the Bunter Bowl and Welsby Cup back to Yoku Road.

The win also keeps the Gallopers in contention for the minor premiership, with Uni facing a bye this weekend.

Elsewhere, Brothers made their own strengths known with a huge win over Sunnybank, the Brethren laying on 12 tries to secure a 83-7 win at Crosby Park.

Nine different players crossed the line for the home side, with the win consolidating the butcher’s stripes place in the top-four and extending their lead to seven-points ahead of Bond University in fifth.

Nate Carroll and Matt Faessler both scored doubles, with Carroll collecting a personal tally of 31-points.

A Wallaby-laden Wests outfit put another dent in Bond’s finals hopes, defeating the Bullsharks 40-31 at Sylvan Road.

Destructive winger Ilikena Vudogo scored his sixth try in the past two games with another double as the Bulldogs cemented their place in the top four.

The Bulldogs denied a late fight back from the Gold Coasters, with Spencer Jeans and returning winger Rhian Stowers scoring in the final five-minutes to bring the scoreline closer at Sci-Fleet Stadium.

Bond now face a must-win game against Brothers this weekend before facing Souths in the final round of fixtures.

Easts beat Souths to round out the action over the weekend, with the Tigers claiming their sixth win of the season against their great rivals at Chipsy Wood Oval.

Queensland Reds stars Liam Wright and Seru Uru both crossed for doubles as the Tigers continued their late season resurgence.

They’ll take on Norths this weekend in their final game of the season, while Souths will face Sunnybank away from home.

GPS and Wests provide a potential finals match up preview when they meet at Yoku Road, while its all to play for on the Gold Coast with Bond’s season on the line against Brothers.
