You can’t take the hipster out of Newtown: City Tahs battle the bush

Most of the Waratahs squad have felt at home on their Beach to the Bush pre-season tour through Central West NSW this week.

In fact, nine players in the 37-man squad grew up in regional NSW.

But not Jake Gordon.

The talented Sydney Uni halfback may be on track to make his Super Rugby debut in a few weeks time, but he’s faced some new challenges this week as the team travelled through Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo on route to Mudgee for a trial game against the Brumbies on Saturday.

According to Dubbo boy Tom Robertson, Gordon has had quite an education this week.

“He’s a guy who grew up in the middle of the city, Newtown. He hardly sees grass unless it’s on a footy field so he’s quite out of his element,” the Wallabies prop from told Nick McGrath from the Central Western Daily.

“We drove past a few kangaroos on our way out here (on Monday) and he said ‘boys, did you see those kangaroos, I was so scared’.

“He’s a bit of a city boy.”

But, Waratahs head coach Daryl Gibson refused to point the finger at just one of his city boys.

“The country boys are right at home. The boys from the east are battling. They’re used to the surf, not the lake.”

The Waratahs take on the Brumbies from 6pm on Saturday.
