Warringah set to unleash “next Will Skelton” on Eastwood at TG Millner

Meet Emmanuel Meafou.

The 146kg, 204cm giant labelled the next Will Skelton by Warringah coach Darren Coleman.

“If you look at players that have all natural tools to be a rugby player, he’s one of them. He’s got everything he needs to go on and play professional rugby,” Coleman said.

The Brisbane junior played NRC with the Melbourne Rising last year before finding his way to Rat Park through former Brothers Director of Rugby and new Warringah forwards coach Ben McCormack.

On Saturday, he’ll start at lock for the Rats in their clash against Eastwood at TG Millner.

“His size speaks for itself but he moves really well for a big guy. He’s still got quite a bit of athletic development to do, like any young kid, but he’s got great skills and can play before the line and after the line,” Coleman said.

“He’s got a good understanding of the game and he’s really intelligent. This weekend he’s calling our lineouts in his first game starting in first grade.

“It’s nice to be able to have that sort of confidence in a 20-year old kid.”

A foot injury late last year kept Meafou out of contention for the Australian U20s side this year, forcing the 20-year old to focus on preseason at Narrabeen.

He quickly made an impression on the talented Warringah squad over the summer months and turned plenty of heads in a cameo off the bench against Southern Districts last weekend.

“Manny had an immediate impact when he came on. He was breaking tackles, getting offloads and generally terrorising the Rebels defence,” Coleman said.

“You often see guys running around in the Shute Shield and think, ‘that guys going to go on and play Super Rugby,’ Emmanuel is definitely one of those in my opinion.”

While Coleman initially compared Meafou to former Waratahs and Wallabies lock Will Skelton, the premiership winning coach said he also reminded him of a young Lukhan Tui, who made his Wallabies debut last year as a 21-year old.

“I noticed Lukhan probably trimmed down a bit since he’s gone to Super Rugby and Manny will probably do the same. He’s playing at 145/146kg at the moment and I can’t see him ever being under 135-138kg, he’s just got such a big frame.”

Meafou will need to use that big frame when he makes his Shute Shield first grade run on debut at TG Millner on Saturday against an Eastwood side growing in confidence each week.

“Eastwood’s forwards are running into a bit of conditioning, they’ve got the best scrum in the comp, both statistically and to the naked eye, then you put Mick Snowden and Jai Ayoub behind that, it’s a concern. We’ll need to turn up to play,” Coleman said.

Eastwood and Warringah meet at 3pm at TG Millner.
