Warringah, Manly and Easts continue winning ways as Shute Shield ladder tightens at halfway mark

Warringah lead the Shute Shield at the halfway point of the regular season, with Manly, Eastern Suburbs and Gordon all just a few competition points behind and safely in the top four.

Check out all the action from a wet and wild weekend of rugby below.

Warringah 18-13 Gordon

Warringah moved two points clear at the top of the Shute Shield ladder after a gritty 18-13 win at a wet Rat Park.

Gordon opened the scoring with a penalty goal but found themselves trailing soon after when young Archie Saunders ran a nice line off Coby Miln to score a well worked set play try from a scrum deep in Gordon territory.

The Stags responded with a second penalty goal but Saunders and Warringah struck again soon after. The 19-year old, fresh out of school, toed a ball down the sideline nicely to set up the Rats’ second try and give his side a 12-6 lead at the break.

Warringah edged further ahead with two penalty goals to lead 18-6 midway through the second half.

But Gordon gave their travelling fans some hope with a try to lock John Akauola in the 70th minute.

The Rats closed out a five point win though and extended their unbeaten run to six matches.

Manly 28-23 Northern Suburbs

Manly’s new flyhalf Brendan Owen starred for the Marlins with 18 points in his side’s 28-23 win over Norths at Allianz Stadium on Friday night.

Owen split the defence in the fifth minute to score the opening try of the evening before Norths responded with a long range intercept try to Jude Gibbs.

The Shoremen took the lead with a penalty goal but found themselves playing with 14 men soon after and conceded a second try to Owen late in the first half.

With just a few minutes to play before the break, Norths regained possession and eventually scored through Luke Ryan to take a 15-14 lead to half time.

Norths scored from a maul early in the second half and led 20-14 before Owen set up a match defining try. Attacking just inside Norths’ half, Owen through a lovely short ball to Ben Gleeson, who offloaded to lock Justin Mataele to score his side’s third try.

The Marlins then sealed the win with a maul try in the 65th minute. Manly sit second at the halfway point of the regular season and head into the June Long Weekend on the back of four straight wins.

Eastern Suburbs 20-18 Sydney Uni

Easts held on in the final minutes to claim a 20-18 victory over Sydney Uni in a match played in a swimming pool on Ladies’ Day at Camperdown.

Both sides exchanged penalty goals in the opening minutes before Uni crossed for a maul try to claim an 11-3 lead in the 26th minute.

Easts hit back with a penalty goal early in the second half, then scored from a maul and converted the goal from near the sideline to claim a 13-11 advantage.

Uni’s 19-year old flyhalf Henry James produced a lovely cross field kick that stopped perfectly in the corner, but Easts’ Seb Strang out sprinted George Clark to save a certain try.

The Beasties then moved possession down the other end and earned a penalty try from a five metre scrum that was set in a massive pool of water.

Trailing 20-11, Uni were awarded a penalty try of their own in the 77th minute when Easts collapsed a maul near their line.

But Uni couldn’t get their hands back on the ball and fell to their fifth loss by less than five points this season.

Hunter 35-17 West Harbour

A hat trick to Hunter hooker Andrew Tuala proved the difference in an important 35-17 bonus point win over West Harbour at Concord Oval.

Hunter kicked two penalty goals to establish an early advantage then made the most of the limited opportunities they got deep in West Harbour territory.

After taking a quick tap from a penalty on half way, George Noa scored for the visitors midway through the first half. Flyhalf Ethan Morgan then kicked to the opposite corner five minutes later and found Sivi Vahai in space to give the Wildfires a 16-3 lead.

West Harbour hit back with a try from close range to lock Liam Lord but went to the break trailing 23-10 after Tuala scored his first try of the afternoon on the back of another quick tap.

West Harbour scored in the 60th minute after a powerful run by Kaliova Nacina and reduced the deficit to six points.

But Tuala scored from the back of a maul soon after, then capitalised on a West Harbour mistake to score his third try and head back to Hunter with a hat trick.

The win was Hunter’s first in four matches and moves last year’s semi finalists to within one win of a spot in the top six.

Randwick 35-18 Western Sydney

Four second half tries helped Randwick claim a 35-18 victory over Western Sydney at a fairly miserable Coogee Oval.

Both sides kicked penalty goals in a tight first half before Randwick scored through winger Joe Browning to take an 11-6 lead to the half time break.

The Two Blues hit back early in the second half to level the scores when Christian Papas found space out wide, but it was mostly one way traffic from that point on.

Randwick dominated territory in the second half and regained the lead when hooker Ben Sugars muscled his way over from the back of a maul.

Joel Ellis than ran a nice line to score off a Kai Willoughby short ball, before Zac Carr kicked ahead for Christian Yassmin in the 70th minute to give the home side a 30-11 advantage.

Both sides crossed from close range in the final minutes but the result was never really in doubt as Randwick moved to fifth on the ladder after claiming just their second win in five weeks.

Eastwood 29-14 Southern Districts

An attacking masterclass by young Aussie 7s squad member James McGregor helped Eastwood claim a 29-14 win over Southern Districts on Sunday afternoon in the Sutherland Shire.

The Rebels started the game brilliantly scoring a counter attack try in just the fourth minute to take an early lead.

But McGregor took control of the match midway through the first half, showing blistering speed to set up two tries for Michael Stringer and JL Bacon within minutes of each other.

McGregor almost scored again late in the first half but was ankle tapped near the try line.

Souths turned to their maul and scored first in the second half to level the scores at 14-all, but Eastwood regained possession from the kickoff and scored immediately through Tom Goddard.

McGregor then made another break just minutes later to set up a second for Goddard and seal a bonus point win for the Woodies.
