UQ’s young guns show off Red Heavies class and depth against Norths

By Tom Primmer

UQ showcased their incredible depth and premiership credentials in Round 3 with a comprehensive 47-10 win over Norths at St Lucia.

Young playmakers Mosiah Christian, Declan Maguire and Tom Molloy were all brought into the Hospital Cup team after starting the season in Reserve Grades, showing the immense depth in this Heavies squad.

Number-eight Iona Halaholo, who also moved up from Second Grade, was among his side’s best, scoring a double, while Kye Oates had a perfect day off the tee, kicking all seven of his conversion attempts.

UQ Asistant Coach Elton Berrange praised his side’s consistency across the full 80-minutes against a plucky Eagles outfit.

“We were more accurate in attack, much squarer and we got more passes in,” Berrange said.

“We focused on not having a dead period in the game and allowing Norths to get on top.

“Sam Wallis had a very good game. He was very good both sides of the ball putting big shots on in defence and getting turnovers & making line breaks in attack.

“We’ll continue to improve our set piece and accuracy in attack. We didn’t convert all our opportunities & we’ll want to get better at that each week.”

UQ will look to continue their undefeated start to the season this weekend when they host Easts in the Grand Final rematch, while Norths are at home against Wests.
