Understrength UQ send warning to Premier Rugby rivals after big win over Easts

By Tom Primmer & Brenden Hertel

A second half blitz delivered the University of Queensland their fourth straight victory to start the season over the weekend, with the Students claiming a comprehensive 52-17 win over Easts in the Grand Final rematch.

The Heavies went to the break with a 19-12, before a clinical five-try attacking display in the second stanza saw the side inflict the Tigers fourth loss of the season.

UQ Assistant Coach Elton Berrange was impressed with his side’s second half form, with the side moving to outright first on the ladder.

“We didn’t have it all our own way,” Berrange said.

“Eli Pilz had the back three scrambling in the first half but they recovered and worked it out on the run which is very pleasing.”

“I was impressed with our decision making particularly in that second half.”

The crushing win further showcases the incredible depth at St Lucia, with the Heavies missing the likes of Mac Grealy, Josh Nasser, Kalani Thomas and Sam Wallis on Saturday afternoon.

Patrick Elekana, who’s still eligible for colts, put in a solid performance in his debut at fullback, while young scrumhalf Mosiah Christian again impressed, as did backrower Will Roach.

The side’s youngsters are working in harmony with veterans Con Foley, Connor Vest and Pat Morrey, with Uni again looming as the team to beat in 2021.

“It’s great to have the depth & see young players step in & perform,” Berrange said.

“Our senior players are critical in helping new players feel comfortable and focus on only having to worry about their job.”

The loss continues Easts’ dismal start to their premiership defence, with the side still searching for their first win of the season when they host Wests this weekend.

UQ will travel to Sunnybank in Round 5 where they’ll look to make it five straight to start their season.
