Undefeated Waverley outfit claim outright CAS premiership, while Knox put score on Barker
Waverley produced a dominant performance to beat Trinity 48-3 to claim the 2023 CAS first XV premiership and finish the season undefeated.
The title is the school’s first since 2020 and their fourth title in the past seven seasons.
While Waverley were guaranteed at least a share of the title heading into the final round, the Eastern Suburbs’ side needed to beat Trinity at Trinity to claim the outright title.
The visitors scored dominated possession and territory for the majority of the match and scored four unanswered tries to lead 22-3 at half time.
While the match turned a little scrappy in the second half, Trinity had few answers for Waverley’s big powerful forward pack and their fast, slick backline.
After kicking a field goal in the final minutes to beat Cranbrook 28-26 in the opening round, Waverley have been the competition’s dominant side, with wins over defending premiers Barker and competition heavyweights Knox coming on either side of the school holiday break.
Waverley then put on big scores against Aloys and Trinity in the final two matches to secure the outright title.
While many Waverley players were initially overlooked for CAS and NSW U18 representative honours, three players played their way into the Australian Schoolboys side after impressing at the Australian Schools Championships earlier this year.
No.8 Noah Tofaeono, scrumhalf Darcy Strandfield and flyhalf Felix Turinui have been named to start at No.8, No.9 and No.10 respectively against Tongan Schools later this year.
In the rounds other matches, Knox were far too good in the second half and beat rivals Barker 53-19 at Wahroonga while Cranbrook beat Aloys 41-0.
