The University of Canberra Brumbies have romped home to a convincing 67-0 win over the ACT XV at Viking Park on Saturday night.

While the score flattered the professionals, much of the match stayed at 24-0 with the UC Brumbies managing to run in a series of late tries to set up a blowout.

About 2000 fans braved the hot conditions in what was Canberra’s first taste of professional rugby since beating the Cheetahs last July.

Captain Ben Mowen said it was a good first up contest for the UC Brumbies as they draw closer to the season opener on February 22.

“These trials are always important for us to sort out combinations and to put our plans into practice,” Mowen said.

“We’ll have another solid week of training before taking the ACTXV again next weekend and then it’s on for round one. We have to make the most of the short space of time we have to make sure everything is running smoothly.”

In all the Brumbies scored plenty of tries, with Henry Speight, Robbie Coleman and Joe Tomane all threatening with each touch.

A rare double for Siliva Siliva would have made the young Samoan’s night, while Harumichi Tatekawa added to his pre-season tally with the opening five-pointer.

The Brumbies will regroup on Monday in their final week before the 2014 Super Rugby season commences.
