Shute Shield Round Two: Six key match-ups to watch
It looks as though we’re in for another wet weekend of Shute Shield rugby when round two kicks off on Saturday.
First round winners Warringah and Norths meet at Rat Park, while first round losers Eastwood and Easts clash at TG Milner.
Elsewhere, Souths host Gordon, Manly face West Harbour, Western Sydney take on Hunter and Uni are at home to Randwick.
It’s difficult to pick in winner in any of the six games this weekend and we thought we’d take a look at a few of the key head to head match ups across the matches in round two.
Enoka Muliufi (Eastwood No.12) v Jordan Jackson Hope (Eastern Suburbs No.12)
Jordan Jackson-Hope didn’t have the happiest of homecomings at Woollahra last week. The Beasties were belted by Norths and Jackson-Hope was forced to do plenty of work in defence at the back.
He’s shifted forward and will play inside centre alongside 18-year old flyhalf Jack Bowen this weekend. Jackson-Hope’s experience should calm Bowen, but they’ll need to keep an eye out for big Enoka Muliufi in the Eastwood midfield who will introduce himself fairly quickly on Saturday.
Both sides will look to spark their attack from No.12 on Saturday but they’ll do it in very different ways. Jackson-Hope and Muliufi’s battle is worth keeping an eye on.
Sateki Latu (Warringah No.1) v Apo Ranavai (Northern Suburbs No.3)
The two former Warringah teammates will clash at scrum time and are also likely to find each other fairly quickly around the park.
The two props were both extremely impressive in round one. Latu scored two tries from close range for the Rats in their tight win over Uni, while Ranavai scored once and set up another try.
Liam Richman (Southern Districts No.10) v Reece MacDonald (Gordon No.10)
Neither Richman or MacDonald would have been overly happy with how their side’s attack fired in the opening round. The Rebels were clunky but new flyhalf Richman and his side were able to find a way to win against Manly. Gordon also had a scare against Hunter.
Whether the rain continues or not, Forshaw will be a heavy track on Saturday and Richman and MacDonald will need to kick and direct their sides to the right parts of the field, something they both know how to do.
Whoever wins this battle, will likely win the game.
Cardiff Vaega (Western Sydney No.12) v Luke Nadurutalo (Hunter No.12)
Former Hurricanes and Blues centre Cardiff Vaega will make his Two Blues and Shute Shield debit this weekend up against Hunter recruit Luke Nadurutalo.
Vaega has been plying his trade in Europe for most of the past decade and the 30-year old should add plenty of punch to the Two Blues attack. He’ll also need to be up for it in defence. Nadurutalo steamrolled a number of Gordon defenders last week and appears to be a real handful.
Simon Kennewell (Sydney Uni No.11) v Christian Yassmin (No.14)
Former Randwick and Aussie 7s back Simon Kennewell will make his starting debut for the Students against his old club and mark up against one of the best and most consistent wingers in the competition.
Yassmin was close to the best on field against Eastwood last week and was hard to stop wherever he popped up on the field.
Dion Spice (Manly No.9) v Dimitry Chipizubov (West Harbour No.9)
Former West Harbour club captain Dion Spice will face his former club at Manly Oval on Saturday and will face an intriguing battle with Pirates scrum half Dimitry Chipizubov.
Chipizubov came off the bench in last week’s last minute win over Western Sydney and at this stage looks to have edged ahead of Will Grant and Max Page in a three-way battle for the Pirates starting No.9 jersey.
Both sides will be looking to make metres through the forwards this weekend and the two No.9s will play a crucial role in organising that.
