Shute Shield: Round 9 Wrap Up
Students overcome slow start to beat Souths
Sydney Uni overcame a 19-point deficit to claim a bonus point win over Southern Districts at University Oval. The Rebels scored three tries in the opening 20 minutes but let Uni back into the match with two tries before the half time break. Sydney Uni looked like a different side in the second half and scored 26 unanswered points to take a comfortable lead and while the Rebels scored twice and showed fight in the closing stages, the Students defence held strong. Matthew Hood sealed victory for Uni with a long range try against the run of play in the final minutes.
Warringah fire late to salvage draw against Easts
Warringah scored 17 unanswered points in the final 15 minutes to salvage a draw against Eastern Suburbs under lights at Rat Park. The home side scored early and led 10-0 before Easts took control of the match, scoring three converted tries and two penalty goals to lead 27-10. With a chance to jump into second spot, Warringah’s attack clicked late in the match as the Holmes brothers and Sam Ward all scored tries, however two missed conversions left the scores level after 80 minutes.
Eastwood break Norths’ hearts with late penalty goal
Eastwood centre Tom Hill kicked a 40-metre penalty goal on full time to give his side a 21-20 victory and hand Norths their third straight loss. After a tight, low scoring first half, Eastwood edged out to 15-8 lead but Norths hit back with a try to centre Jordan Heyer. The Shoreman looked to have sealed victory when Gary Bautz crashed over in the 77th minute but Hill and Eastwood would laugh last. The one point victory sees Eastwood leapfrog Norths into second spot.
Randwick run riot at Coogee
Randwick retained the Sir Roden Cutler Shield with a big win over Gordon at Coogee Oval. The Galloping Greens scored 10 tries including doubles to lock Ed Kennedy and reserve backrower Jack Hayson. While it was an afternoon to forget for Gordon, Waratahs backrower Jack Dempsey made his long awaited return from injury off the bench. Dempsey and Andrew Kellaway have both joined the Waratahs in New Zealand ahead of this weekend’s clash with the Chiefs.
Penrith show plenty of fight against Manly
Penrith have produced one of their best performances of the season to give competition leaders Manly a scare at Nepean. While the Marlins eventually ran away with things, Penrith scored the first and last try of the first half and trailed by just five points at the half time break. While Manly were too good in the second half, the Emus did score two more tries to claim a four-try bonus point. Manly are now 11 competition points clear of Eastwood and Northern Suburbs ahead of next weekend’s local derby against Warringah.
Parramatta too good for in form Pirates
Parramatta held off a fast finishing West Harbour side to claim their second win of the season in a match marred by an ugly brawl late in the game. In a seesawing battle, the Two Blues took the lead through a try to captain Andrew Cox and while West Harbour hit back late in the match, they couldn’t repeat their heroics from last weekend.
