Shute Shield: Round 9 Team of the Week

1) Ivan Fepuleai – Manly

Another week, another two tries for big Manly prop Ivan Fepuleai who is not only big and strong, but also knows exactly when to increase the tempo through a quick tap.

2) Jay Fonokalafi – Western Sydney

While Fonokalafi didn’t have the best afternoon at lineout time, he did a mountain of work around the park and tackled all day.

3) Nick Brown – Manly

Dominated the Rebels at scrum time in an impressive 75 minute stint for the Marlins.

4) Irie Papuni – Western Sydney

Playing against his former club, former Australian U20s lock Irie Papuni showed why he is one of the best young locks in the competition. The type of no-nonsense lock every side wants.

5) Justin Mataele – Manly

Manly lock/backrower Justin Mataele has been one of the form new players in the competition and continued that on Saturday with a big stint against the Rebels.

6) Boston Kerapa – Norths

Kerapa terrorised the Warringah edges, running at full speed and linking with the backs around him nicely when needed. Showed good pace to score an impressive individual try as well.

7) Brodie Leber – Norths

Likewise, Leber made a few of the Warringah defenders look silly at times. He is bigger than most No.7s in the competition and he used that size to his advantage in round nine.

8) Michael Icely – Eastwood

Consistently one of the best players on the field in every game he plays, Icely deserves another chance at Super Rugby next season.

9) Rilloy Suesue – Western Sydney

The Two Blues nippy No.9 was at his best against Easts, sniping to score three tries for Western Sydney and set up an important win for his side.

10) Matt Minogue – Eastwood

Steered the ship well for the Woodies in a gritty win over Randwick at Coogee Oval. Minogue has plenty of strike around him and pulls the strings well enough to get the best out of them.

11) Callum Sirker – West Harbour

Finished off one of the counter attack tries of the season to keep his side in the match against the Students. Sirker would have to be close to one of the quickest players in the competition.

12) Simon Kennewell – Sydney Uni

The former Aussie 7s player played his best match since returning to the Shute Shield, scoring a try and setting up another in the Students tight win over West Harbour.

13) Henry Clunies-Ross – Sydney Uni

Clunies-Ross was equally as impressive and also set up a try and scored another. If Uni are to work their way up the ladder and challenge for the premiership, you get the feeling Kennewell and Clunies-Ross will be two big reasons why.

14) Daniel Ala – Eastwood

A spectacular finish in the far eastern touchline to score Eastwood’s first try against Randwick. Not many wingers in the competition could have scored that try and that is what makes Ala so special.

15) Winiata Cherrington – Norths

Young fullback Winiata Cherrington is making the most of his opportunities in the No.15 jersey while Max Burey is over in Perth. He ran for 135 metres and had a hand in everything in the Shoremen’s big win over the Rats.
