Shute Shield: Round 4 Wrap Up

In a big weekend of upsets, Manly and Easts claimed bragging rights in their respective local derbies, while Western Sydney and West Harbour upset Gordon and Souths.

Catch up on all the action from the Anzac long weekend below.

Manly 19-17 Warringah

Manly scored 14 unanswered points and fought back from 17-5 down to claim a two point win over Warringah in the first of two Northern Beaches derbies scheduled in 2022.

The Marlins opened the scoring through winger Semi Camaisala before momentum swung towards Warringah.

Rookie flyhalf Connor Hickey had a day out, setting up the home side’s first try then scoring their second to hand Warringah a 19-5 lead at half time.

Manly hit back through centre Nic Benn, then took the lead inside the final 10 minutes when Langi Glesson latched on to an inside ball and charged to score next to the posts.

Warringah attacked deep in Manly territory in the final minutes but couldn’t find a way through the solid Marlins’ defence, as the visitors held on to claim a famous derby victory.

Eastern Suburbs 22-19 Randwick

Eastern Suburbs scored what might be the try of the season to claim a 22-19 victory over Randwick in a nail biting local derby at Coogee Oval.

The two sides both scored twice in the first half before Easts added a penalty goal to take a 15-12 lead to the break.

Randwick took the lead early in the second half following an Oli Barden try and looked to have sealed victory with 10 minutes remaining when Saxon Gilles crossed. But Gilles’ try was disallowed after the ball was dislodged by a desperate tackle from Easts No.9 Teddy Wilson.

With just minutes on the clock, Easts’ fullback Luke Glen found space on the eastern touchline and linked with Wilson. Wilson then offloaded to Archie Gavin who ran untouched to score under the posts and steal a 22-19 victory for the visitors.

Western Sydney 25-15 Gordon

Western Sydney produced their best performance in a number of years to claim an impressive 25-15 victory over defending premiers Gordon at Eric Tweedale Stadium.

The Two Blues led 10-0 at half time following a Tevita Funa try and a penalty goal. Gordon hit back with two tries from close range, but Funa put the home side ahead again when he threw a perfect cut out pass to winger Toti Mafi.

Gordon levelled the scores with a try to winger Alesana Pohla but it was all Western Sydney from that point on. Classy flyhalf Roman Prasad kicked a penalty goal to edge his side ahead, before lock Tuitakau Kioa dived over from close range to score and seal a 25-15 victory.

In a huge day for the Two Blues, Western Sydney also beat Gordon in second and fourth grade, winning three of the day’s four grade fixtures.

Eastwood 34-33 Northern Suburbs

Eastwood scored four minutes after the full time siren to claim a 34-33 victory in Cowra and hand Northern Suburbs their first loss of the season.

Woodies winger Fabian Goodall scored a hatrick, but it appeared to be Norths’ evening when Harry Burey scored in the 70th minute to give the Shoremen a 33-22 lead.

Goodall crossed a few minutes later to set up a grand stand finish, as the Woodies forwards took control. After winning a lineout inside Norths’ 22 metre line, the Eastwood forwards controlled possession and edged closer to the line.

Ed Craig finally found a way through the stubborn Norths’ defence and Jackson Bird converted the try from next to the posts to seal a one point victory for Eastwood.

Sydney Uni 33-14 Hunter

Sydney Uni claimed their third consecutive victory, beating Hunter 33-14 in Mudgee on Saturday.

The Students produced their most complete performance of the season, scoring five tries in the 19-point victory.

Hunter showed glimpses of their best and were unlucky not to score a third try in the closing stages. Despite that, the result was never really in doubt, with the new look Uni side continuing to improve under new coach Sean Hedger.

West Harbour 35-15 Southern Districts

West Harbour outmuscled a disappointing Southern Districts outfit to claim a 35-15 victory at Drummoyne.

Carlo Tizzano stared for the Pirates but it was the Rebels poor defence that cost them most in the first half. After trailing 21-5, Souths fought back and trailed by just six points inside the final 10 minutes.

But West Harbour were too big and strong in the closing stages. Replacement prop Vaotangi Mafi barged over from close range to extend the home sides lead before former Rebel Faleula Finau scored minutes later to seal the 20 point victory.

West Harbour jump into the top eight for the first time this season following the victory, while Souths sit in last place with just one win from their opening four matches.
