Shute Shield: Round 3 Wrap Up

Northern Suburbs are the only undefeated team remaining in the 2022 Shute Shield competition, following another impressive win over a 14-man Southern Districts outfit.

Eastwood, Easts, Warringah, Sydney Uni and Manly also claimed victories over the Easter long weekend. Catch up on all the action below.

Northern Suburbs 41-18 Southern Districts

Southern Districts No.9 Cooper Chambers received a red card for dissent in the 15th minute of the Rebels 41-18 loss to Norths at North Sydney Oval on Friday.

Lying at the bottom of a ruck, the typically mild mannered No.9 gave referee Matt Kellahan some advice and Kellahan immediately stopped the game and red carded Chambers.

The Rebels led 7-3 at this point but struggled to match it with the competition leaders, particularly in the second half.

Norths led 20-13 at half time, then blew the Rebels away in the second half, scoring three tries including a double to Nathan Russell to continue their unbeaten start to the season.

Souths are now one from three and travel to play West Harbour next weekend in an important match for both struggling sides.

Eastwood 35-22 Hunter

Eastwood were forced to work for their four points against an improving Hunter outfit in Newcastle on Friday.

The Woodies jumped away to a 14-0 lead early, scoring twice down the left hand side in similar fashion. But Hunter hit back and following a try from impressive centre Nafi Tuitavake trailed 20-10 at the break.

Hunter struck first in the second half through flanker Tiueti Asi and reduced the deficit to five points, but that is as close as they would get.

Eastwood scored two quick tries through Eric Tauiliili and Sam Delores to jump away to a 32-15 lead.

Hunter scored again in the 70th and attacked deep in Eastwood territory for most of the final 10 minutes but couldn’t find a way through the solid Woodies defence.

Eastwood claiming their second win of the year 35-22.

Eastern Suburbs 42-19 Western Sydney

Eastern Suburbs recruit Luke Glen starred in a 42-19 victory over a brave Western Sydney outfit at Woollahra on Saturday.

Glen set up two tries in the first half off the back of some individual brilliance but the Two Blues matched Easts try for try and trailed by just two points in the 60th minute.

Two Blues winger Tailiki Nadredre scored twice for the visitors, his second midway through the second half bringing the scores to 21-19.

But Easts, led by their replacement forwards, kicked up a gear in the final 20 minutes and scored three tries to claim a bonus point victory.

Warringah 30-25 Gordon

Warringah handed Gordon their first loss of the 2022 season, beating the defending premiers 30-25 at Chatswood Oval to take plenty of momentum into next week’s local derby against Manly.

Gordon led 17-11 after a tight first half but Warringah took control after the break scoring three unanswered tries.

Charlie Tupou took a quick tap and scored from close range early in the second half, then would have scored again a few minutes later but was tackled illegally by Gordon flanker James Lough and awarded a penalty try.

Ben Woollett then continued his brilliant start to the year, scoring and converting from the sideline to give the visitors a 30-17 lead.

Gordon scored and kicked a penalty goal to set up a grand stand finish, but the home side couldn’t find a way through the Warringah defence in the final minutes.

Warringah’s 30-25 victory securing sixth spot on the ladder after three rounds.

Sydney Uni 41-14 West Harbour

Sydney Uni made the most of their lethal driving maul to claim a bonus point 41-14 win over West Harbour.

With the scores level at 7-7, Uni scored three consecutive tries off the back of their maul, with Ciaran Loh, Banjo Travers and Jack McCalman all scoring to give the visitors a 22-7 lead at the break.

West Harbour returned serve with a try of their own from a driving maul early in the second half but it was all Sydney Uni from that point on.

Ciaran Loh scored a second try again from a rolling maul before Henry Clunies-Ross and Simon Kennewell both finished off long range tries to hand the Students a comfortable 41-14 victory.

Manly 34-21 Randwick

Manly continued their good form, beating Randwick 34-21 at Coogee Oval to claim back to back wins for the first time since May last year.

The Marlins started brilliantly for the second straight week and jumped away to a 19-0 lead following tries from Max Douglas, Semi Camaisala and Ollie Horne inside the opening 20 minutes.

Randwick played their way into the match with a try to Alex Hills from a driving maul and to Christian Yassmin from counter attack, then trailed by just one point when halfback Timothy Sippel scored a converted try early in the second half.

But Manly sealed their second straight win with a try from a driving maul in the 49th minute, then a second five pointer to winger Semi Camaisala who finished off some Ollie Horne brilliance.

Manly will take plenty of confidence into next week’s derby, which is shaping up to be one of the most even affairs we’ve seen in recent years.
