Shute Shield: Round 2 Wrap Up

Northern Suburbs and Gordon are the only two undefeated teams remaining in the competition after two rounds, while Sydney Uni, Eastwood, Hunter and Manly all claimed their first victories of the 2022 Shute Shield season.

Catch up on all the round two action below:

Sydney Uni 34-21 Randwick

A hat-trick to young Randwick hooker Oli Barden still wasn’t enough for Randwick, beaten 34-21 by Sydney Uni.

The Students were far improved from their round one performance and jumped away to a 21-0 lead in the first half on the back of three strong driving mauls.

Bardon hit back with the first of his three tries from a maul early in the second half before Uni put the result beyond doubt with an early contender for try of the season.

Attacking from inside their own 22, the Students attacked down a short side and spread the ball through six sets of hands before replacement hooker Tom Horton raced away to score.

Randwick scored a further to tries from mauls to add some respectability to the scoreline, but the Students had the last laugh scoring their sixth and final try from close range on the back of a dominant five metre scrum.

Eastwood 22-17 Eastern Suburbs

Eastwood held off a fast finishing Eastern Suburbs outfit to claim their first victory of the season at TG Millner.

The Woodies led 12-0 inside the opening 12 minutes following tries to Ed Craig and Lachy Shelley. The second try saw the ball spread from one sideline to the other, before Harry Wilson threw a beautiful cut out pass to Shelley who beat the fullback to score.

Easts, also chasing their first win of the year, hit back when young flyhalf Jack Bowen followed his pass and scored under the posts.

Eastwood added a penalty goal on the stroke of halftime, then looked to have sealed the result when Chris Bell put Komiti Tuilagi through a big gap to score and take a 22-7 lead.

But Easts refused to give in and reduced the deficit to five points with a penalty goal and a try to new fullback Luke Glen in the 76th minute.

The visitors then attacked from deep inside their own half and looked to have found space in the 79th minute, only for Bowen’s cut out pass to an open winger to be ruled forward.

Eastwood held on to secure an important 22-17 win at home.

Hunter 29-12 Western Sydney

Hunter scored 29 unanswered points to beat Western Sydney 29-12 under lights at Merrylands.

The Two Blues looked impressive early, scoring twice through Aleks Dabeks and Tevita Funa to claim a 12 point lead.

The home side’s defence was equally impressive and Hunter remained scoreless until the 49th minute.

Hunter’s two big recruits, No.8 Lona Halaholo and centre Luke Nadurutalo then put their stamp on the game.

Halaholo scored in the 49th minute to get his side on the board, before hooker Phil Bradford crossed to level the scores.

Nadurutalo then created space for Nafi Tuitavake who broke through Western Sydney’s midfield defence and set up winger Tom Watson to give his side a 19-12 lead.

Flyhalf Connor Winchester then added a penalty goal before Leon Fukafuko scored after the full time siren to seal the 29-12 victory.

Gordon 44-22 Southern Districts

Gordon’s forward pack outmuscled Southern Districts’ to set up an impressive 44-22 win over the Rebels at Forshaw.

Souths winger Christian Kagiassis got his side on the board early, finishing off two tries to give Souths a 12-0 lead.

But Gordon hooker Mate Vailanu responded almost immediately with two tries of his own from close range to level the scores.

Reece Macdonald converted both tries and added a penalty goal on the stroke of half time to give the visitors a 17-12 lead.

Vailanu was in the action again early in the second half, setting up Tevita Vea to score from a well worked move from the base of the lineout.

Souths hit back with a penalty try from a dominant driving maul, but it was all Gordon from that point on.

The big Stags pack steamrolled the Rebels in the final 15 minutes to claim a 44-22 victory.

Manly 41-14 West Harbour

Manly blew West Harbour off the park in the first half of their round two clash at Manly Oval.

As the sun poked through, the Marlins played their best half of football in a number of years and looked to be playing at twice the speed of the Pirates.

Centre Nic Benn scored twice, while James Ohmsen and Fraser Toohey also crossed before the forwards got in on the action.

Prop Ivan Fepuleai scored from a driving maul, then Max Douglas raced away to score untouched from inside his own half to give his team a 41 point lead at the break.

After a grilling from coach Joe Barakat, West Harbour looked like a different side in the second half and scored twice from close range, but the result was never in doubt.

Manly far too good for the Pirates in their best performance for quite some time.

Northern Suburbs 31-16 Warringah

Northern Suburbs were too good for Warringah in a fiery clash at Rat Park.

After producing a near perfect performance in round one, the Shoremen picked up where they left off and jumped away to a 14-3 lead in the first half following tries from Brodie Leber and Angus Sinclair.

Sinclair’s try came from a well worked backline play that saw fullback Matt Ryan charge through a gaping hole in the Warringah defensive line.

Warringah hit back not long after half time when Richard Clift barged over on the back of a strong run from Ben Woollett.

But Norths responded immediately. Prop Apo Ranawai picked up the ball at the base on the ruck and found no one in front of him, charging through to score his third try of the season.

The Rats scored from a driving maul to give the Hillbillies hope of a second straight comeback, but those hopes were dashed when Nathan Russell took an intercept and passed to Nick Duffy who scored to seal the 31-16 victory.
