Eastwood leapfrogged Warringah into fourth spot as a result, while Western Sydney and Gordon boosted their finals’ hopes with impressive wins.
Catch up on all the action from a wet weekend of rugby.
Gordon 23-13 Randwick
Gordon scored two tries in the final 10 minutes to take the points over Randwick at a drenched Coogee Oval on Saturday.
The two sides scored near identical tries from close range in the opening 20 minutes through Gordon’s Harry Emery and Randwick’s James Tomkinson, before the Stags added a penalty goal to take a 10-7 lead to the break.
Both sides added penalty goals in the second half with little separating the two rivals until the final 10 minutes.
Gordon caused a turnover on halfway and attacked against the run of play, eventually spreading the ball to Jacob Abel in the centres to score and take an 18-13 lead.
The visitors then sealed victory in the 76th minute when they spread the ball through the backline in the wet to winger Will Terry, who dived into a puddle in the Coogee Oval corner to secure an important 23-13 win.
Gordon move to seventh spot following the tight win, while Randwick drop to eighth.
Sydney Uni 41-6 Eastern Suburbs
Sydney Uni’s forward pack bullied their opponents in an impressive 41-6 victory over the struggling Beasties.
The Student’s big men scored all six of their side’s five pointers with Jack McCalman and Mitch Whiteley both claiming doubles.
Easts kicked two penalty goals to stay in the match and trailed just 10-6 at halftime.
But the Beasties had few answers for the Uni forwards after the break, who created three driving maul tries in a dominant display in the wet.
Replacement prop Brad Amituanai sealed the victory with a pick and go try in the final minutes.
The Students’ consolidated their spot in the top four with the bonus point win, while Easts’ remain in 10th position and are slowly running out of time to make a run for the finals.
Western Sydney 14-10 Warringah
A first half double to impressive Western Sydney fullback Toti Mafi proved the difference in the Two Blues 14-10 victory over an in form Warringah outfit at Eric Tweedale Stadium.
The home side trailed early following a brilliant individual try from Rats scrumhalf Rhett Butler. Butler scooted from the base of a scrum inside his own half and showed good speed to score in the corner.
Western Sydney hit back when flyhalf Tom Curtis placed a clever grubber into a puddle inside Warringah’s quarter. Mafi won the race to the ball, then kicked ahead and regathered to score the home side’s opening try.
On the stroke of half time, Mafi again pounced on a loose ball. This time he broke three tackles and dived over to score a scrappy but important try and give his side a 14-5 lead at the break.
Warringah hit back midway through the second half with a driving maul try against a seven man Western Sydney pack to trail 14-10.
But the visitors couldn’t find a match winner, as Western Sydney held on in the final minutes to the boisterous cheers of a wet and jolly Two Blues’ crowd.
The Two Blues are now in sixth spot, six competition points behind Warringah in fifth but just three points clear of Hunter in ninth.
Manly 27-7 Southern Districts
Manly scored a try after full time to secure a four try bonus point and claim top spot on the Shute Shield ladder with five rounds remaining.
In horrendous conditions at Manly Oval, the Marlins kicked a penalty goal in the 34th minute to lead 3-0 at the break following a tight first half.
But the Manly forwards kicked up a gear in the second half. New prop Duke Nginingini scored twice from close range, his second try coming on the back of a strong run from winger Semi Camaisala against the run of play.
No.8 Mana Koko then broke through some poor Rebels defence to score and give his side a 22-0 lead.
Souths scored a consolation try inside in the final 10 minutes, but then conceded a five pointer to winger Fraser Toohey after the full time siren on another disappointing day for Southern Districts.
Manly are now one competition point ahead of Norths at the top of the Shute Shield ladder and could go close to securing their spot in the top four with wins over West Harbour and Hunter in the coming weeks.
Eastwood 29-7 Hunter
Eastwood ended a three game losing streak with a hard fought 29-7 victory over Hunter in the wet at TG Millner.
The home side jumped away to a 12-0 lead after 20 minutes, scoring twice through backs Lachie Shelley and Enoki Miluifi on the back of a mountain of possession from the Eastwood forwards on Hunter’s line.
Hunter hit back with a try to hooker Phil Bradford but trailed 19-7 at the break after English imports Chris Bell and George Worth combined for the try of the match.
Bell kicked high on the halfway line and Worth charged through to take the ball uncontested. He then raced away to score and give his side a comfortable half time lead.
Fabian Goodall scored the only try in a dour second half, but that was enough for the Woodies to take maximum points from the match and move back into the top four.
Hunter are now eighth and host Western Sydney in a crucial clash next week.
Northern Suburbs 35-6 West Harbour
Norths scored four tries in a 35-6 victory over West Harbour in a match that was moved to St Luke’s Oval following heavy rainfall.
Prop Apo Ranawai, lock Declan Carroll, backrower Boston Kerapa and No.8 Brad Hemopo all crossed for five pointers, while Nathan Russell added 15 points from the kicking tee.
The Shoremen sit second on the ladder after their eighth win of the season. They’ve earned 15 bonus points from 13 rounds, which may prove important in the race for a spot in the top four later this season.
