Shute Shield Round 10: Five standout performers

Easts and Souths finally ended their drought in round 10, while Sydney Uni knocked off Eastwood in a battle of the competition frontrunners.

Elsewhere, Warringah and West Harbour played out a thriller and Randwick and Norths couldn’t be split.

We selected a handful of the best performers from round 10 over the weekend.

Will Goddard – Sydney University

With Tim Clements away with the Aussie 7s, young Sydney Uni fullback Will Goddard continued his impressive form in his side’s win over Eastwood.

In just his second year in grade, Goddard used blistering speed to set up two tries for the Students and is proving to be a real handful for defences each week at University Oval.

Coby Miln – Randwick

Two tries, three conversions, a penalty goal and a field goal for good measure. Coby Miln starred with 22 points in just his second start for Randwick in their draw against Norths.

Miln is a Kiwi who has been playing in Japan and looks to have the size, skill and ability to make a real impact in this competition.

Will Macpherson – Eastern Suburbs

Things haven’t quite gone to plan for new Beasties coach Simon Kneebone so far this season but it might be starting to turn at Woollahra, if Saturday’s win over Gordon is anything to go by.

Kneebone changed Easts’ playing style completely over summer and is encouraging his forwards to play right across the pack. Young lock Will Macpherson threw the last pass for two tries on Saturday, linking cleverly with the quick backs around him in the wider attacking channels.

Special mention also goes to hooker Josh Smith who claimed a first half hat trick against the Stags.

Kodie Hawkins – West Harbour

The Pirates came agonisingly close to their third win of the season at Rat Park on Saturday but were beaten by a Ben Woollett penalty goal after the full time siren.

Fullback Kodie Hawkins played a crucial role in his side’s fast start, scoring twice in the first half in the 33-32 loss.

Max Douglas – Manly

Back in clubland after spending the last two seasons with the Waratahs, young lock Max Douglas is showing Marlins’ fans exactly why the NSW coaches think so highly of him.

Still just 22, Douglas ran a fantastic line to score the winning try against the Two Blues and will benefit greatly from more time in the Shute Shield, as he continues to grow into his body.

He’s got a big future ahead of him.
