Shute Shield Mid Season Review: West Harbour

By MARK CASHMAN

West Harbour have always been that sort of side that needs one maybe two additions to make them one of the more dangerous side in the Shute Shield.

And as we hit the halfway mark of the competition there seems to be some important cavalry on the near horizon with Carlo Tizzano and Alofa Alofa set for some game time.

Wests coach Mark Gudmunson talks about building a squad as this season wore on and the fact that they are still within reach of the playoffs says they are making progress.

But as Gudmunson says more back to back efforts are needed to get the sort of results that the program at Concord wants.

Here’s what the coach has to say:

ALL THE NUMBERS

Played 8, won 3, Lost 5
Points For: 182
Points Against: 272
Differential: -90
Ladder position: Ninth on 16 points

How would you describe your first half of the season?

Our story in the first half of the season is a squad that is moving in the right direction together.

Who has been the standout player so far?

The stand out player from the first half of our season has been Kali Nacina. He’s worked hard and now instead of just being a weapon in attack he’s working hard in defence.

What’s been the difference between your best and worst performances so far this year?

Difference in our performances have been down to effort – when we have repeat efforts and everyone is working hard together, we are good. When we are not, we have lapses in the game that leak points.

How does your squad look for the backend of the season?

The squad is looking strong, we will see some of Carlo Tizzano which is a massive lift, Alofa Alofa has been training with us since our bye round, so he will also add some real quality to the group. We have a few injuries like all teams, but we are ready to go.

Which two teams will play in this year’s grand final?

The two teams that will play in the grand final are West Harbour and Sydney University.
