Shute Shield Mid Season Review: Penrith

By MARK CASHMAN

Their future beyond this year is uncertain but Penrith Emus coach John Muggleton can see his side improving in the second half of the Shute Shield season.

Playing numbers have been a worry for the Emus and work commitments have meant that they have had to field under-strength teams when they are on the road.

That was a case in point when the Emus travelled to Newcastle to take on the Hunter Wildfires.

Muggleton praised the work of his outside centre Jale Seninawanwa and is hopeful of seeing some of early season skipper Andrew Fiagatusa at the back end of the year.

Here are ‘Muggo’s’ thoughts about the season:

ALL THE NUMBERS

Played 9, won 1, Lost 8
Points For: 83
Points Against: 507
Differential: -424
Ladder position: 12th on four points

How would you describe your first half of the season?

While we obviously had the euphoria of our first win it has been a difficult start. We have been okay for long periods at Nepean Rugby Park but our form when travelling has not been up to standard.

Who has been the standout player so far?

Our stand out player so far has been our No.13 Jale Seninawanwa who has carried the ball strongly and defended well in a difficult position.

What’s been the difference between your best and worst performances so far this year?

Travelling has been poor. We have had to field some under strength teams due to players working particularly v Wildfires and that was reflected in the scorelines.

How does your squad look for the backend of the season?

We will look to get a few injured players back for the back end including our captain and No.7 Andrew Fiagatusa.

Which two teams will play in this year’s grand final?

I can see Sydney Uni and last year’s premiers Gordon battling it out on the big day in September.
