QLD GPS: Brisbane Boys College know one slip and premiership hopes gone
By ANT BRAND
GPS First XV ladder leaders Brisbane Boys College know “one slip” could end their premiership charge with second-placed Nudgee ready to pounce should they put a foot wrong against Toowoomba Grammar on Saturday.
BBC and Nudgee are equal on eight competition points after three wins and a bye, with BBC’s superior for-and-against of plus 49 points all that separates the GPS juggernauts.
But BBC have the edge following last week’s 45-6 obliteration of The Southport School in which they become the first side since 2005 to keep a TSS First XV team tryless.
Brisbane Boys’ College Director of Rugby Stephen Meehan said while the season-defining win over TSS was pleasing, it was imperative his charges continue the momentum in their Round Five match-up against eighth-placed Toowoomba Grammar.
“One slip can be costly,” he said.
“You don’t want to have a patchy run now. You want to be delivering solid performances every week. I would imagine that’s where everybody’s minds will be.
“I think they understand that. They enjoyed the win (over TSS) but they know we have to work hard this week.
“It is a great opportunity to take all the good from the week previously and continue to build on what they want to do.
“They understand the way they want to play and what they want to achieve this week.”
Toowoomba Grammar have managed just one win in 2020 which came last week via a 38-29 victory over Brisbane State High following three consecutive losses against Ipswich Grammar (31-12), TSS (32-17) and Nudgee (43-14).
Saturday’s fixture against a struggling Toowoomba Grammar provides BBC with a wonderful opportunity to add to their dynamite for-and-against with the side averaging 44.33 points a match in attack, while they leak an average of just 9.6 points a game.
Despite these outstanding statistics and in an ominous sign to the rest of the competition, Meehan reckons their attack has another gear to go to yet.
“I think there are times over the year when I have seen them attack with a little bit more venom than what they did against TSS,” he said.
“They were straight forward and matter of fact and knew what they were about. They delivered the performance they needed to.
“If they can double up (against Toowoomba Grammar) that would be again a step forward.”
And with some pundits already declaring BBC 2020 Premiers despite three rounds remaining, Meehan said his troops knew what was required to push on in their search for GPS First XV Premiership glory.
“We have got a number of players who have been in this position before,” he said.
“In sports these days you hear a lot of people saying you have to learn from this or that but here is a really good example to really learn from what has happened before.
“They are a very solid group and have a real bond and I think that will really help in regards to helping them maintain their direction.”
In other Round Five matches, Churchie take on Brisbane State High, Nudgee face Brisbane Grammar School and TSS host Gregory Terrace.
