Round 4: Rats & Wicks claim derby wins, as Shute Shield top six tightens

Warringah and Randwick claimed impressive local derby victories across Anzac Round, while Gordon, Hunter, Norths and the Two Blues also joined the winner’s circle.

After the opening month of the season, just four competition points separates the top seven teams on the ladder. Catch up on all the action below from a extra long weekend of rugby.

Warringah 30-19 Manly

Warringah’s outside backs ran riot in an impressive 30-19 victory over Manly in front of a big crowd on Anzac Day.

The Rats took the lead early with a penalty goal then pushed further ahead when new centre Komiti Tuilagi broke through to set up a try for Ben Marr.

Leading 10-0 midway through the first half, a yellow card to Warringah halted their momentum and Manly seized the opportunity, scoring through Wilson Dulieu in front of a packed hill, then earning a penalty try from a driving maul to take an unlikely 12-10 lead to half time.

Warringah regained the lead when Marr crossed for his second try early in the second half and added a penalty goal soon after.

Manly were then reduced to 14 men and the Rats took full advantage with the yellow card, a maul try and a penalty goal all in the space of five minutes gifting the visitors a 30-12 lead.

The Marlins scored a late try on the back of a brilliant flick pass from Hunter Ward, but it was Warringah’s day on what will hopefully become an annual Anzac fixture.

Randwick 29-28 Eastern Suburbs

Randwick fought back from 21-3 down to claim a thrilling 29-28 victory over Easts in front of another big crowd at Coogee Oval.

After a tight opening quarter, Jack Bowen opened the scoring for Easts with a try under the posts off a dummy and a big right foot step.

Minutes later, he then set up a counterattack try for Cooper Whiteside to give the visitors a 14-3 lead.

Attacking against 14 men, Randwick looked to be fighting their way back into the match, but a mistimed long ball led to an intercept and a 21-3 Beasties advantage.

Christian Yassmin crossed on the stroke of half time to keep the home fans happy, then again seven minutes into the second stanza from some scrappy play and suddenly Randwick trailed by just six points.

The Galloping Greens then turned to their maul and scored two tries in quick succession to take a 29-21 lead.

Chris Bell scored in the 77th minute and Bowen converted from near the sideline to reduce the deficit to just one point, but Easts failed to capitalise on decent field position in injury time, allowing Randwick to hold on for a one point win.

Gordon 31-27 Sydney Uni

Gordon scored a fantastic match winning try from inside their own half to claim a 31-27 victory in first grade and a clean sweep across grade and colts over Sydney Uni on a massive weekend for the Stags.

Uni opened the scoring with a try to winger Josh Calvert in the 7th minute then defended Gordon’s maul brilliantly. After repelling several raids, the Students eventually conceded two tries from close range though and trailed 12-5.

Uni scored from a driving maul of their own soon after, but Gordon led 19-10 at the break after Harry Emery set up charging hooker Cam Lewis for a five pointer late in the first half.

Back in the Uni No.13 jersey, Henry Clunies-Ross scooped up a Gordon mistake and scored in the first minute of the second stanza, but once again Gordon responded, this time through captain Milan Basson who finished the afternoon with two tries.

Uni levelled the scores after a clever quick tap from flanker Sam Allsopp then kicked a penalty goal to lead 27-24 inside the final 10 minutes.

With the match slipping away, Gordon spread the ball wide from inside their own half and eventually found space on the far touchline. Brandon Quinn showed good speed, then passed inside to Ollie Arcus who scored the match winner in the 79th minute.

Uni had an opportunity inside Gordon’s quarter after the full time siren but couldn’t capitalise from an attacking line out.

Hunter 39-19 Eastwood

Hunter flyhalf Ethan Morgan set up three tries in the Wildfires 38-19 victory over Eastwood in his first start in the No.10 jersey.

19-year old speedster Brendan Palmer opened the scoring for the home side in Newcastle before Eastwood responded quickly with a maul try.

Morgan then took control and set up a try for Deon Evans-Ao from a clever chip, then another for Elijah Crosswell who charged on to a no-look short ball from the playmaker.

Trailing 19-7 at the break, Eastwood scored early in the second half through Tom Goddard and trailed by just 7 points with 15 minutes remaining after winger Michael Stringer capitalised on a Hunter mistake.

But Morgan produced another clever kick to set up winger Sitiveni Vahai just moments later.

Then Hunter captain skipper Rob Puliuvea snatched an intercept and “raced away” to score and seal a bonus point win for the Wildfires.

Norths 34-22 West Harbour

Norths claimed their third straight bonus point win and moved to top spot on the Shute Shield ladder but only after surviving a scare from a West Harbour team who seem to be inching closer to a big result.

The Pirates opened the scoring at Concord with a try to big lock Will McDonald before Norths responded with two penalty goals.

The “biggest” Shoremen then combined to set up the try of the match. Prop Michael Scott threw a lovely short ball to front row partner George Thornton who steamed into the West Harbour backfield before linking nicely with Roan Frostwick for a famous five pointer.

After leading 13-7 at the break, the Norths’ forwards combined again with quick hands to set up a try for lock Tom Smith early in the second half and when the visitors scored again from a maul the match looked to be over at the 60 minute mark.

But just as they’ve done all season, West Harbour refused to go away and scored twice in five minutes through fullback Justin Marsters to reduce the deficit to just six points with 10 minutes remaining.

Norths showed their class in the closing stages though, with Jude Gibbs setting up a try for winger Carrick McDonough, then kicking a penalty goal to seal a 34-22 win.

Western Sydney 31-26 Southern Districts

Western Sydney survived a late scare from Southern Districts but left Forshaw with a bonus point win to move in to the Shute Shield top six.

The Two Blues were at their attacking best in the first half and led 14-0 following two long range tries from Christian Papas and Reece Suesue.

Souths hit back when scrumhalf Liam Blyde took a quick tap to score after a long period of attack on the Two Blues line, but the visitors pushed further ahead when Sitiveni Moceidreke scored untouched soon after.

Searching for their first win of year, Souths scored through young winger Declan Mulcahy on the stroke of half time, then produced a clever lineout play to cross again and reduce the deficit to just five points midway through the second half.

The Two Blues scored their third counterattack try of the afternoon to extend their lead, but Souths responded with another clever line out play to set up a grand stand finish.

Trailing by just five points, the Rebels attacked the Two Blues line for the final five minutes but couldn’t find a way through with their maul despite several attempts, allowing Western Sydney to hold on for an important win.
