RN Archives: Port Hacking ready for Students after upset win over Randwick

THE champagne flowed after Port Hacking's dramatic win over glamour club Randwick at Port Hacking last Saturday (April, 1983).

The win was just what the doctor ordered for the southern Sydney club which is languishing near the bottom of the Club Championship after the opening four premiership rounds.

“It's given the whole club a shot in the arm." chief Hacker Mick Taylor told Rugby News.

"We have been playing reasonably well all year but we just haven't been finishing off our moves.

“Against Randwick everything seemed to click. It’s all systems go from here.”

Taylor will check the fitness of big strong prop Dean Glasson and dashing winger Randell Clarke before finalising his team for the clash with Sydney University at Port Hacking Rugby Park on Saturday.

Glasson suffered a gashed eye and Clarke a groin strain during their team's courageous victory over the Galloping Greens.

But coach Taylor is confident both players will prove their fitness before Saturday.

Glasson is one of the real heroes out at Port Hacking this winter.

He and former St George forward Peter Stone have filled in admirably for representative props John Coolican and Mark Harding this year.

“I can’t talk highly enough of the effort Dean and Peter have put in during the absence of our two top props." Taylor said.

Sydney University, after opening the season in brilliant fashion, has crashed to two straight losses.

The Students were never in the hunt against the Rats from Warringah last week and badly need a morale boosting win against Port on Saturday.
