Riverview & Kings move two wins clear of competition following wins over Newington & Scots

Riverview halves Angus Grover and Fred Garling played match winning roles in their side’s 28-21 victory over Newington.

Grover and Garling laid on a try each in the first half, then combined brilliantly to set up the match winner midway through the second half.

Newington opened the scoring after 10 minutes but Iggies struck twice in five minutes to lead 14-7 at the half time break.

Newington responded with a brilliant team try early in the second half, scored by barnstorming winger Heamasi Makasini.

Henry Dempsey crossed from close range to retake the lead for Iggies, before Newington flyhalf Jarryd King set up a try for centre Keone Anitelia-Tsiassis to level the scores once again.

Attacking from a scrum just inside their half with 15 minutes remaining, Grover broke the Newington defensive line and raced towards the try line.

He was eventually tackled, but recycled the ball nicely, allowing Garling to throw a lovely long ball and give his side a seven-point lead.

Newington had ample opportunity in the final 10 minutes to strike back, but struggled to execute in the closing stages.

At Scots, Kings forward pack flexed their muscle in the final 15 minutes, scoring three tries to seal a 40-28 victory at Bellevue Hill.

With the match in the balance at 21-19, prop Hasani Bloomfield scored following a strong run off the back of a line out to give his side the lead.

Kings then pushed further ahead with a driving maul try five minutes later and sealed the win in the 66th minute with a third try from close range inside 10 minutes.

At Hunters Hill, Joeys ran in seven tries in a dominant 35-10 victory over Shore. Fullback Max Palmisani had a perfect afternoon with the kicking tee.

Riverview and Kings are two wins clear of the competition heading into the representative and school holiday break but meet in a bumper round seven clash when the competition resumes on July 26.

Newington and Joeys are four competition points behind the leaders with four rounds remaining, with Scots another two points behind and Shore yet to win this season.
