Riverview confident Kings can be beaten and that GPS title is still up for grabs
Riverview coach Toby L’Estrange believes his side is good enough to beat Kings this weekend and shake up the first XV competition.
Kings remain undefeated after seven rounds and sit four competition points ahead of Riverview in second place.
But a win to Iggies this weekend would set up a massive final fortnight of the competition.
“There’s definitely belief within our group that we can win on Saturday. There’s got to be otherwise there’s not much point running out. That belief comes from the work the players have put in to get to this point” L’Estrange told Rugby News.
“Kings have a number of very good players and they were heavily represented in the rep sides.
“But we’ve got a group of very hard working and determined players who I think are often underrated. So even if they haven’t played as much rep footy as the Kings players, they’re ready to rip in and take it to them this weekend. We’ve got nothing to lose and we won’t walk off the field with any regrets.”
Riverview returned from the school holiday break in style with an impressive 47-24 victory over Scots at Bellevue Hill last weekend.
Captain Liam Grover bagged a hattrick, while flyhalf Joe Dillon and winger Tom Hartman both claimed doubles in the 23-point victory.
“We spent some time away together during the holidays up at Nelson Bay, which allowed us to revisit what was important to us and that led to a good performance against Scots last week,” the coach said.
“Bellevue Hill is a really hard place to perform, Riverview hadn’t won there for a very long time. We created opportunities on the back of our defence, which is what we talked about leading in to the game.
“But we also let a few tries in in the second half, which we weren’t happy with so there’s definitely room for improvement.”
Kings beat Riverview 31-26 when the two sides met back in round three but L’Estrange believes his side have taken some big steps forward since that last clash in late May.
“There were definitely things from that game that we’ve learnt from. Kings’ line up is similar to what it was in round three, so there are some key areas that we’ve looked at in the lead up to Saturday.
“But at the same time, we’ve grown a lot as a team and we need to continue looking for areas of improvement in our own game.
“Kings came out firing last time and scored a few quick tries and we were playing catch up for the rest of the game. We need to start the match better than we did.
“They also taught us a few lessons at the breakdown and we know they’ll come hard at us there again.”
Riverview host Kings at 3:15pm on Saturday afternoon. In the rounds other matches, Newington take on Joeys and Scots travel to play Shore.
