Riverview beat Joeys to join Kings at top of GPS ladder; Scots strike late to beat Newington

Riverview made the most of their chances to claim a 34-26 victory over Joeys in front of a vocal home crowd to claim top spot, alongside Kings, on the GPS first XV ladder at the halfway point of the 10-round season.

The home side scored two tries from five-metre penalty taps and winger Jack Plamondon capitalised twice on Joeys’ mistakes to claim a double in the eight point win.

Riverview opened the scoring through a well-worked tap move after 11 minutes and led 17-7 at the halftime break following Plamondon’s first five pointer.

Joeys hit back when flanker Charlie Ghattas peeled off a driving maul, but the Joeys forward conceded another try from a five-metre tap soon after.

Riverview kicked a penalty goal to take a 27-19 lead, before Plamondon struck again from another Joeys’ mistake to all but seal the result with five minutes remaining.

Joeys scored a late consolation try but were no match for their arch rivals on this occasion.

At Bellevue Hill, Scots scored two late tries to claim an unlikely 39-38 victory over Newington in a five minute period that could have serious premiership implications.

Scots led 17-12 at halftime before Newington took control of the match.

The visitors led for most of the second half and looked to be cruising towards their fourth win of the season when they led 38-29 inside the final two minutes of the match.

But Scots scored a try from a driving maul in the 69th minute, then controlled possession for over five minutes to score the match winner well after the 70th minute.

While at North Parramatta, Kings scored 12 tries in a dominant 60-10 victory over shore with No.8 Issac Fonua, No.11 Ashton Tregonning and No.13 Will Farrah all claiming doubles.

At the halfway point of the first XV season, Riverview and Kings lead the competition with four wins from the opening five matches.

Newington sit in third spot with three wins and two losses while Scots and Joeys have both claimed two wins each.

Shore, last year’s premiers, are winless after five rounds.

Round six will be held on Saturday ahead of the representative and school holiday break.

On Saturday, Riverview host Newington, Joeys face Shore and Scots host Kings.

GPS representative teams will be picked following those matches.
