QLD Premier Rugby: Round 12 Match Previews
By Tim Mosey
The Bunter Bowl is on offer at Yoku Rd, we’ve got a heavyweight clash on the Gold Coast and a host of Reds will be in action in Premier Rugby action this weekend.
GPS vs Sunnybank
GPS take on Sunnybank this Saturday at Yoku Rd for the Bunter Bowl.
The Gallopers will be looking to make amends after falling victim to an in-form Bond University side in round 11.
The Dragons have called upon some old heads for the clash.
Former TSS and Australian schoolboy from back in 2000 Rex Tapuai – brother of former Red Ben – starts at 13.
He’s joined on the left flank by former Australian 7’s star Peter Lee who has spent time playing league for Logan Brothers in recent years.
GPS will need the Smith brothers to return to top scrummaging form this weekend in order to combat standout Dragon prop Franko Abdalla, who was brilliant last weekend.
Brothers vs Easts
Brothers return to Crosby Park this weekend and will be hoping Easts aren’t in a menacing mood after their heavy defeat to Souths last week.
The Butcher stripes as a club have been stand alone in 2018.
One only has to look at their showing in the Australian U20’s side from this year’s World Championships to understand the level of young talent coming through the club.
Captain Luke Beauchamp will lead by example.
Back row partner Criff Tupou will attempt to replicate his devastating form from last week.
Easts have Jack Frampton in super form at five eighth.
His direction will be critical if the Tigers are to overcome their fellow striped nemeses.
Norths vs Souths
Norths seem to have a monumental task ahead of them at Chipsy Wood Oval.
Coming off the bye they will be at full strength and will welcome Duncan Paia’aua and Kane Douglas into the side.
But Souths are on a damaging trajectory and Quade Cooper is a maybe for the weekend.
He would add to the already potent backline of Eto Nabuli, Teti Tela, Jayden Ngamanu and Chris Feauia-Sautia.
The Eagles will need to be on their game (or attempt to employ some sort of innovative, untested, obscure game plan) if they hope to knock off the Magpies.
Bond University vs University of QLD
The match of the round promises to be a blockbuster.
Bond are rolling on with four wins on the trot and seem to lift a gear when playing at their new digs dubbed ‘The Canal.”
Last week they were clinical against their more fancied opposition GPS.
Second row giant Zach Moimoi had a barnstorming match and will again push his team toward victory.
UQ are rarely too fazed by their opposition.
Head coach Mick Heenan will again look to a strong young forward pack to get the work done up front.
Their backs will be lead by five eighth James Dalgleish and centre Harry Curtin, who impressed in his return against Brothers last week.
The second week of Reds stars in action across the competition promises to be as good as the first.
