Premier Rugby: Wests return to top four as Easts make like tougher for Brothers

Wests have pushed back into the Hospital Challenge Cup top-four after a crushing win over Sunnybank in Round 15, while Norths also secured their second win of the season as club Rugby returned to free-to-air television on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs ran in seven tries in a comprehensive 52-26 win over Sunnybank, with rampaging Rebels winger Ilikena Vudogo scoring four of his own to propel his side into third spot on the ladder.

The win is the side’s seventh of the season as they look to return to the finals for the first time since 2017.

Heavyweights UQ, GPS and Bond University await the Bulldogs in the coming weeks, making this win all the more important.

Norths snapped an eight-game losing streak at Hugh Courtney Oval on Saturday afternoon, beating Souths in the second battle of the birds for 2021.

Flanker Harrison Fox scored a hat-trick in the 43-19 win, with the clash shown on Nine Gem for the first time this season.

After a stint with the Australian Sevens side, Nick Chapman made a successful return to clubland, with his experienced head and x-factor helping the Eagles claim bragging rights over the Magpies for the second time this season.

“Chappo just gives everyone confidence, he trains and plays at a level that is above everyone else, and he just makes people follow him,” Norths head coach Pat Byron said.

“The win meant a lot to the club.  We had a tough month in reality with some of our results, so to turn the corner and get a win was really pleasing

“I thought our set piece was a good as it has been, and we just generally held the ball better than we have in previous games, which meant that we gave ourselves an opportunity to score some points.”

UQ continued their undefeated season with a 45-19 victory over Bond University on the Gold Coast, knocking the Bullsharks out of the top-four in the process.

The game remained tight for much of the encounter, with Uni leading narrowly at 21-19 with 20-minutes to play, before a late four-try flurry saw the ladder-leaders run away with a 26-point win.

The Heavies again showcased their incredible young talent, with the likes of Kye and Braiden Oates, Lukas Ripley, Kalani Thomas, Will Roach and Mosiah Christian crossing the line to complement their experienced core.

Easts continued to disrupt the plans of the top-four, beating Brothers in a nail biter at Tigerland.

The Brethren led 17-12 at half-time, before the Tigers hit back, with the scores even at 22-all with 20-minutes to play.

A Lachy Kirk penalty eventually saw the Tigers claim a 25-22 lead, with the side continuing their resurgence in the second half of the year.

They’ll take on Souths at Chipsy Wood Oval next week, while Brothers host Sunnybank and will need a win to keep their spot in the top four.

UQ host GPS for the Bunter Bowl in a huge clash at St Lucia, with Wests and Bond University facing off at Sylvan Road.
