Premier Rugby Round 9: Standout Performers
A host of returning Super Rugby players were impactful in round nine as Wests, Easts, Brothers and GPS claimed wins.
Here are the standout performances.
Ilikena Vudogo – Wests
The Rebel’s winger piled on a hattrick in his return to Queensland Premier Rugby for Wests.
Vudogo’s ingenious first five pointer came early before he crossed twice within five minutes late in the second stanza.
The speedster’s impact allowed the Bulldog’s to run away with a comprehensive victory against Souths away from home and rise to the top of the ladder.
Rhys Van Nek – Easts
Easts’ prop scored twice as his side ran riot against the top four placed Bond.
Van Nek’s first score came at a crucial stage in the first half when Bond only trailed by a converted try.
His second came fifteen minutes later to stabilise the home side’s grip on the game and ultimately secure a comprehensive upset victory.
Veresa Mataitini – GPS
The winger’s two tries proved the difference as GPS overcame reigning premiers UQ in a low scoring affair.
After a scoreless first half, Mataitini sprinted forty metres to score off a Hudson Meyer kick and give the visitors early second half momentum.
The speedster then produced an unbelievable individual effort three minutes later down the same wing. The No.14 scooted down the sideline, pinged his hamstring and kicked for himself in an inspiring individual effort.
Richie Asiata – Easts
Easts’ hooker emulated the performance of his prop on Saturday when he also crossed twice for the Tigers.
Asiata’s first try cemented Easts’ first half dominance while his second five pointer from a rolling lineout maul put the game to bed in the 66th minute.
Brendan Bell – Brothers
Brothers’ hooker scored the only second half try for the home side as they held on by one point against Sunnybank.
Bell was also a dominant tackler and defensive pillar for the Brethren throughout the tightly contested match.
