Round eight of the Hospital Cup was headlined by a huge Sunnybank upset against UQ as well as victories for GPS, Wests and Bond.
Catch a review of the action below.
GPS 45 v Souths 19
GPS secured their third win in a row with a strong victory against Souths at Yoku Road on Saturday.
Souths had the best of the contest early with strong field position for much of the first half. Tye James capitalised on that momentum with an athletic finish in the 20th minute to open the scoring for the visitors.
GPS stabilised quickly however, scoring three of their own tries toward the back end of the first forty. Gallopers’ debutants Jacob Rabai and Sebastian Ward combined for a try right on half time to leave the score at 21-5.
The second half saw swings in momentum and multiple five pointers for both teams as GPS ran away with a comfortable victory.
UQ await GPS next weekend in a top tier clash, while Souths will host Wests next Saturday as they look to get back on the winner’s list.
Sunnybank 34 v UQ 31
Sunnybank produced the upset of the season with a win over competition leader’s UQ at Biggs Oval on Saturday.
UQ stamped their authority on the contest early in the opening half with three of the first four tries. A succession of elite passes saw Kye Oates cross over in 5th minute to open the scoring, before his brother BJ made the most of a beautiful inside ball from inside centre Alex Horan to score in the 10th minute.
Sunnybank hit back strongly in the remainder of the first stanza. Multiple tries from short backline balls allowed Sunnybank to quickly pull back the margin. The Dragons took a 26-17 lead into half time after punishing a UQ mistake in their own half and travelling down the other end for a Josh Fenner try.
The Dragon’s made the best possible start to the second half when David Feliuai lene scored his second try in the 40th minute after an enterprising build up.
UQ clawed their way back to within three points when Alex Horan scored with four minutes to play and only fourteen Dragon’s on the field.
Sunnybank courageously hung on to cause the biggest boilover so far in the 2022 competition. The Dragon’s will face Brother’s next weekend while UQ will look to maintain their top spot against GPS.
Wests 43 v Norths 25
Wests secured their fourth victory from seven outings against Norths at Scifleet Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Moses Sorovi finished off a creative eighty metre Bulldog’s team try to open the scoring in the 15th minute. Fletcher Spicer added Wests’ second five pointer soon after.
Captain Will Rogers scored to keep Norths in touch at halftime with a 15-8 score line in favour of Wests.
Early second half Wests tries to Whiteside, Eloff and Anderson put the result to bed. Norths however produced two second half tries of their own thanks to a seventy-metre intercept from Asher Milne and Taelyn Nukunuku five pointer post the eightieth minute.
Wests will face Souths next Saturday, while the injury riddle Norths will reach a much-needed bye.
Bond 26 v Brothers 16
Bond overcame Brothers in the battle for second spot on Saturday afternoon.
The Bull Shark’s made the most of their opportunities in a low scoring first half that saw them lead 14-0. Tyrell Kopua crossed in the 7th minute and it wasn’t until moments before half-time when the next points would be scored thanks to winger Maxwell Dowd.
Second half tries to Tyler Campbell and Marlon Jones saw Bond extend their lead to an unassailable margin.
Brother’s weren’t without highlights of their own. Winger Callum Hicks produced a strong individual run down the right wing to score early in the second half and a Tayler Adams no look flick allowed Billy Bulley to score in the final fifteen minutes.
Bond will play Easts next weekend while Brothers face Sunnybank fresh off a major upset.
