Round seven of the Hospital Cup saw wins for UQ, GPS, Brothers and Souths, while an injury riddled Norths outfit languish at the bottom of the competition table without a win.
Catch a review of the action below.
UQ 31 v Bond 28
UQ came out on top in a heavyweight clash against Bond at St Lucia on Saturday.
BJ Oates opened the scoring for UQ as they held sway for the opening twenty minutes.
Bond swiftly hit back with two of their own first half tries. Scrumhalf Liam Dillon made a long-range break for Connor Pritchard to score before Devo Henson added another Bond five pointer minutes later.
UQ however scored on half-time through No.10 Declan Maguire to leave the home side trailing 14-12 at the break.
A seesawing second half saw both teams go try-for-try. Finnegan Hearn crossed twice for UQ but Abele Atunaisa put Bond in front with ten minutes left on the clock.
Student’s skipper Pat Morrey scored the match winner soon after to secure a win that sees UQ separate themselves at the top of the table. Bond suffered their second loss of the season and play Brothers next week.
Norths 7 v GPS 54
GPS dominated an injury ravaged Norths’ side to claim their fourth win from five matches.
The Galloper’s outside backs made the most of their opportunities with Douglas Rayment scoring four tries and Todd Winkley claiming a double.
Rayment’s scoring opportunities came from outstanding individual carries that saw him brush past Norths’ defenders at will.
Chris Kuridrani was a potent threat all day. The outside centre set up multiple tries for his teammates and was a tackle-busting machine for the entirety of the contest.
Norths’ flyhalf Harry Langbridge added the Eagles’ only score for the match and was a shining light for the home side on an otherwise tough day.
Norths’ winless season continued as they face Wests next week, while GPS will play Souths at Yoku Road.
Brothers 32 v Easts 28
Brothers’ overcame a courageous Easts’ outfit at Crosby Park to secure their fourth straight win of the 2022 season.
The Brethren’s attacking prowess was on display early as Mosiah Christian and Billy Bulley crossed in the opening stages.
Easts’ eventually stabilised and gained some ascendancy before the main break. Tries from Rhys Van Nek and Elijah Pilz saw the visitors leading 14-13 at half time.
Jake Pappin’s inspiring ninety metre sprint saw him score under the posts in front of his old side and the Brother’s faithful. Despite conceding a yellow card, Easts continued their momentum when hooker Martin Brennan crossed minutes later from a driving maul.
Down by fifteen with fifteen to play, Brother’s steeled themselves to score three consecutive tries and take home a brave win.
Brothers play Bond next weekend, while Easts will rue their missed opportunity as they head into the bye.
Souths 32 v Sunnybank 22
Souths claimed their first win of the season against Sunnybank at Chipsy Wood Oval on Saturday afternoon.
Sunnybank’s inside centre David Feliuai scored twice in the opening stanza as neither side managed to break away with momentum.
The Magpies opening half highlight came courtesy of a clever Harry McMahon grubber kick that Mone Ma’afu dutifully pounced on to opening the scoring for the match. Souths went into the main break with a 19-15 lead.
The home side had the best of the second half as outside backs Tye James and Mone Ma’afu both scored doubles.
South’s will play GPS next week after recording their first win, while Sunnybank will clash with competition leader’s UQ.
