Premier Rugby Round 6 Wrap Up: UQ, Jeeps, Bond and Sunnybank impress
Indigenous round saw Sunnybank claim their first win and UQ, GPS and Bond rise up the ladder, while Norths and Souths remain winless after six weeks.
Catch a review of the action below.
Easts 15 v UQ 49
UQ rose to the top of the ladder after a dominant win over Easts at Bottomley Park on Saturday.
The Student’s set the tone in the first half with both Tareta Junior Siakasini and Quentin Raravula crossing to give the visitors a 13-5 score line at the break.
Siakasini extended his side’s lead early in the second forty when he set up Connor Molloy for a try in the opening minute. UQ proceeded to dominate the rest of the contest by scoring six tries to two in the second half to seal a comprehensive victory.
Despite the margin, Easts’ winger Max Baker provided some highlights for the home fans with a double. Reserve Tigers’ scrumhalf Ben Littleton also produced a strong individual effort bursting through multiple UQ defenders.
UQ play Bond in a top of the table clash next week, while Easts will play Brothers at Crosby Park.
Bond 29 v Souths 24
Bond overcame a resolute Souths’ side to record their fourth win of the season on Saturday afternoon.
Both sides traded tries early in the contest as Abele Atunaisa and George Francis crossed for Bond and Souths respectively.
The Bull Sharks carried the momentum into half time though when Connor Pritchard and Nixon Taramai scored to make it 24-7 at the break.
Souths’ spirit shone through in the second forty as the visitors scored three tries to Bond’s one. Theo Fourie, Jakob Morrison, and Harry McMahon’s tries helped the Magpies get within five points with ten minutes to play, but it was ultimately too little too late.
Bond will play UQ in a heavyweight battle next Saturday, while the courageous Souths remain winless and play Sunnybank next weekend.
Wests 19 v GPS 20
Wests lost their top spot on the ladder after falling short against GPS at Scifleet Stadium on Saturday.
Enterprising play from the respective scrum halves helped break the early deadlock as both sides’ defences proved impenetrable early.
A Hudson Meyer flick gave Mitch Treleaven GPS’ first five pointer, while some quick thinking from Wests’ Moses Sorovi set up Vilikesa Raboiliku for their second try to leave the halftime score at 14-7.
Jeral Skelton threw a precise cut out ball to flyer Ilikena Vudogo for West’s only second half try. The winger’s effort left the Bulldog’s in front by seven with twelve minutes to play.
GPS fought back late to claim victory though thanks to an Emosi Tuqiri try and a clutch Jason Hofmeyr penalty conversion in the dying minutes.
Wests lost their position at the top of the ladder heading into the bye, while GPS face the winless Norths next weekend.
Sunnybank 36 v Norths 19
Sunnybank claimed their first victory of the season against Norths at Biggs Oval on Saturday afternoon.
The first half belonged to Sunnybank as they piled on four unanswered five pointers. Despite not scoring in the opening twenty minutes of the contest, the Dragon’s dominated the opening stanza with tries to Tom Mellor, Josh Fenner, Dave Feao and Rex Tapuai.
Veteran Rex Tapuai scored off the back of a beautifully executed backline play on the stroke of half time that left Sunnybank with a 26-0 lead at the break.
A depleted Norths’ outfit showed plenty of character in the second forty as skipper Will Rogers scored two of three Eagles’ tries.
Sunnybank ultimately proved too strong though and play the winless Souths next weekend, while Norths’ resilience will once again be put to the test when they take on GPS.
