Premier Rugby: Round 2 Wrap Up

Jeeps, UQ, Bond and Brothers were all victors as Sunnybank, Norths and Wests stayed winless after Round 2 of the Hospital Cup.

Check out a recap of the weekend’s action below.

Sunnybank 7 v Bond 31

Bond University began their 2022 campaign with a dominant five try to one victory against Sunnybank at Biggs Oval on Saturday afternoon.

The visitors opened the scoring when scrumhalf Lachlan McInnes darted through severall Sunnybank defenders to score in his first Premier Grade start.

Grant Anderson’s men made it 12-0 prior to the halftime interval after Tyrell Kopua scored from a well orchestrated rolling maul. Debutant Rhys Sheriff then put the visitors further ahead with a second maul try.

Bull Sharks winger Maxwell Dowd scored two second half tries before Sunnybank hit back with a consolation prize to leave the final score at 31-7

Sunnybank remain winless after two rounds heading into the bye while Bond will tackle GPS in their first home game next weekend.

GPS 36 V Easts 24

GPS continued their winning ways against a competitive Easts side at Yoku Road on Saturday.

A Tautalatasi Tasi offload gave Josh Vuta the opening points of the contest, as the Gallopers raced to a 17-0 lead inside the first ten minutes of the match.

Josh Collins produced a try of the year contender in the 32nd minute with a burst of pace and agility to score his first of two tries for the match.

Josh Collins then extended the home side’s lead with a brilliant individual try, before Ben Mowen’s side fought back and scored three times to trail by just three points at the break.

GPS asserted their authority on the contest in the second half though with outside backs Floyd Aubrey and Douglas Rayment scoring the only tries during the second forty.

The Gallopers secured their second victory of the season to set up their third-round clash with Bond while Easts will look to overcome a winless Wests next week.

Wests 28 v Brothers 34

Brothers claimed their first win of the season against Wests at Scifleet Stadium over the weekend.

The visiting Brothers’ outfit had all the ascendancy early, scoring four successive tries in the first half.

Winger Billy Bulley showed his wheels to open the scoring, before Mosiah Christian played his part in the next two Brothers tries.

Wests scored a much needed 39th minute try courtesy of Sione Latu Talakai to go into halftime with down 24-7.

The Bulldogs continued to fight back in the second half and reduced the margin to six points with 15 minutes on the clock.

But despite a weight of possession and momentum, Wests couldn’t crack Brothers defensive line in the final moments and remain winless in 2022.

UQ 47 v Norths 12

Reigning premiers UQ proved too powerful for Norths at St Lucia on Saturday afternoon.

The home side quickly had more points than minutes on the clock as they reached forty points in the 33rd minute.

Hooker Jake Tierney scored two of six unanswered first half tries by the Students.

Flyhalf Bradley Twidale converted six of his seven opportunities for the match as UQ put the result beyond doubt within the first half.

Norths spirit shone through in the second half, outscoring the hosts by five points when reserve Stuart Ford pulled off a length of the field intercept in the 76th minute.

The Students comprehensive victory leaves them two from two while a winless Norths head back home to face Brothers in round 3.
