Premier Rugby Round 16: 5 Standout Performers

Easts, GPS, UQ and Sunnybank all claimed wins in a final’s shaping round sixteen over the weekend.

Here are five standout performances.

Meli Dreu – Easts

Easts’ fullback was the man of the moment in his sides inspirational comeback win against Brothers.

The dynamic No.15 set up winger Tyrees Wilson for the penultimate try of the match that narrowed the margin to five.

Dreu’s most impactful moment came with an eightieth minute try and clutch conversion that singlehandedly dragged Easts over the line.

Jayvan Scarff – Sunnybank

Sunnybank’s No.9 was crafty and cunning in his side’s big win against Souths.

After a slow start for the Dragon’s, Scarff provided the spark and an injection of flair that lifted the side’s confidence.

The scrumhalf threw a bullet for Puni Aupuni to score in the left corner in the first half. Scarff continued to challenge Souths’ defence with guile throughout the day.

Reuben Leilua – UQ

Despite only coming onto the field late in the second half, the powerful UQ prop made his mark.

The Students couldn’t crack Bond’s defence despite applying immense pressure post the eightieth minute.

After relentless phases from UQ, Leilua finally charged his way over to win the game and help consolidate his side’s current top two standing.

Tom Lucas – Sunnybank

The fullback had his usual impact in Sunnybank’s fourth victory of 2022.

Lucas thrived with less responsibility on his shoulders having moved from flyhalf to No.15.

He scored two late tries including a special kick and chase off his own boot. Lucas’ capitalised on a massive run on the right wing from his prop to score a second time.

Emosi Tuqiri – GPS

GPS’ prop continued his strong form in season 2022 with an impactful performance against Norths.

The scarce scoring opportunities in the opening stanza didn’t stop the powerful front rower from breaking the game open for GPS in the second half.

A beautiful no-look short ball from Tuqiri early in the second forty set up Adre Namalo Kauyaca before the No.1 decided he would do it himself with a bullocking try minutes later that put the game to bed.
