Premier Rugby Round 14: Late Mail, Team News & Coaches Call

The final stretch of the Hospital Challenge Cup continues this weekend as competition for finals spots gets even tighter.

Round 14 sees undefeated ladder-leaders the University of Queensland host Sunnybank at St Lucia, with the Heavies naming another imposing side to take on the Dragons.

Connor Vest and Brad Kapa will make their first start together in the second row, with skipper Pat Morrey and Reds duo Angus Scott-Young and Sam Wallis behind them in the back row.

Mosiah Christian will make his first start at flyhalf after featuring both on the wing and at scrumhalf this year, while Lukas Ripley will make his club debut in the centres after an injury-filled season so far.

It’s a great test for Sunnybank, who pushed another completion heavyweight in GPS all the way for much of the 80-minutes last weekend.

Lachlan MacElroy returns to the side at fullback for the Dragons, seeing Peter Lee move to the centres.

Feao Fotuaika will start in the front row after an impressive set-piece performance against the Gallopers last weekend.

“Our mindset is on focusing on our own game and asking questions of UQ,” Sunnybank head coach Sione Fukofuka said.

“We respect that they have had a great season so far, but are confident if we execute, we can give ourselves a chance at upsetting them.

“We had some positive moments against GPS and were in touch with 15mins to go but need to be more clinical inside the 22m and come away with points.

“Our set piece was good but needs to operate at a higher percentage consistently to allow us to play to our shapes and options.

“We have worked through the week on getting through our phases and identifying opportunities earlier and being clinical over the 80-minutes.”

At Sylvan Road, Wests will look to maintain their spot in the top four when they host Easts.

The Tigers have again been hit by injury, with stars Seru Uru, Eli Pilz and Jack Frampton joining Jack Hardy and Richie Asiata on the sidelines.

Their absences sees Henry Olsen (number-eight), Ben Littleton (scrumhalf) and Preston Springhall (fullback) move into the starting side.

Latu Talakai is back for Wests, as is Tigers prop Rhys van Nek which makes for an exciting scrum battle, while the Bulldogs have also remodelled their backline after a comprehensive win over Norths last round.

Ilasisa Droasese has made the mode to fullback, seeing Glen Vaihu start in the centres, while Moses Sorovi and Carter Gordon will reprise their combination in the halves.

Two top-four sides will face off at Yoku Road, with GPS taking on Bond University.

Jeeps have made just the one change to the side who beat Sunnybank last weekend, with Adre Namalo Kauyaca starting at inside-centre in place of Maaloga Konelio.

After a bye last week, the Bullsharks have Wests and Brothers breathing down their necks and a loss on Saturday could see them drop out of the top-four.

Joey Fittock will be key at fullback, as will backrowers Dylan Rowe, Connor Pritchard and Declan Dineen.

The final game of the round sees Norths host Brothers for the club’s annual Family Day.

The Eagles have been steeled by the return of star trio Will Rogers, Callum MacDonald and Jacob Prideaux, and they’ll be aiming to impress in front of what’s sure to be a big home crowd.

They’ll face a star-studded Brothers outfit, with the likes of Hamish Stewart, Hudson Creighton and Paddy James providing strike for the butcher’s stripes.

The Brethren could return to the four with a win, and they’ll be hoping to do just that at Shaw Road.
