Wests 31 v Easts 37
Easts defeated the first placed Wests at Scifleet Stadium to bring themselves within touching distance of the top four.
The away side marginally had the better of the opening forty leading Wests 20-14 at half time.
Opposing wingers and former teammates Ben Navosailagi and Shea Lalagavesi opened their respective side’s scoring. Easts’ No.14 Jordan Carriera continued his strong first half setting up Lalagavesi’s second to give the Tigers the lead.
Eli Pilz conversions and a Mathew Skipwith-Garland try gave Easts an eleven-point lead in the second half shortly after Wests had reduced the margin to one point thanks to Connor Anderson. Consecutive Ethan Dobbin’s rolling maul tries put Wests back in front by one point with fifteen minutes on the clock.
A 73rd minute Jake Pappin try sealed a classic victory for Easts in a game full of momentum shifts. The Tiger’s will play Norths next week while Wests stay atop the ladder ahead of a clash with Bond.
Brothers 46 v Norths 31
Brothers secured their eight win of the year against Norths at Crosby Park over the weekend.
The high scoring affair began with a rush as Brothers’ led 22-19 at the main break.
Hooker Ethan Rokoura scored in the opening minutes to give the home side a fast start. Both sides traded points and penalties for the remainder of the first stanza as Norths’ No.2 Tonga Maafu crossed twice to keep the Eagles within touching distance.
Two quick tries to Ash Watson and Billy Bulley early in the second half gave Brothers some breathing room. Brothers’ comfortable lead was quickly reigned in as Norths’ capitalised on a yellow card to score twice and bring the margin back to three points with ten minutes to play.
A Tayler Adams cross-field kick and a Paddy James five pointer with three minutes to play ensured a Brothers’ victory.
Brothers’ maintain second spot on the ladder and will face Souths next week while the brave Norths will battle Easts.
GPS 19 v Bond 17
GPS claimed a narrow victory over Bond at Yoku Road on Saturday afternoon.
After nearly thirty minutes without a score from either side, Bond produced one of the tries of the season to open their account. A quick tap from a Connor Pritchard not releasing penalty saw the Bull Shark’s travel ninety metres with winger Joey Fittock finishing off. Taii Tualima opened GPS scoring before Mitch Treleaven’s try saving tackle denied another length of the field Bond effort as the home side led 7-5 at the break.
Emosi Tuqiri crossed early in the second half to extend GPS advantage to nine points. Bond hit back swiftly with two tries to George Blake and skipper Dan Boardman to lead by three before GPS’ winger Floyd Aubrey crossed in the corner in dubious circumstances to give the Galloper’s the slimmest of victories.
GPS solidify their top four spot and will battle Sunnybank next weekend while Bond will meet the top of the table Wests.
UQ 42 v Souths 19
UQ returned to their early season form with a strong win against Souths at St Lucia over the weekend.
The Student’s had the best of the first half and led 21-7 at the main break.
No.7 Sam Wallis was impressive early scoring a clever try from a quick tap and setting up UQ’s second through Kye Oates. Bas Hanna continued his strong season with Souths’ only try of the first half.
The second half saw UQ’s Cam Flavell and TJ Siakisini both claim a double as well as Souths’ winger Harry McMahon as the Student’s ran away with an important win.
UQ are placed third on the ladder heading into the bye while Souths will have to contend with a second placed Brothers’ outfit.
