Premier Rugby Round 11: 5 Standout Performers

Wests, GPS, Bond and UQ all secured round eleven victories in wet conditions over the weekend.

We’ve picked five of the best performers from Saturday’s matches.

Tyler Campbell – Bond

The flyhalf scored two brilliant tries in Bond’s dominant win against Sunnybank.

Campbell split Sunnybank’s defence in half with a show and go early in the second half that gave Bond the ascendancy.

His second try arose out of pure desperation when he put in a lengthy chase and dive to score from a Max Dowd kick.

Cameron Flavell – UQ

UQ’s hooker ensured his side returned to it’s winning form against Norths.

Flavell set the tone early in what was a crucial contest for the Student’s season.

The No.2 scored twice in the first half to give UQ much needed belief and momentum early in the game.

Poasa Niumataiwalu – GPS

The inside centre was a standout in his starting debut for GPS.

With big Tasi Tasi shoes to fill, Niumataiwalu scored the Galloper’s only first half try to keep his side in the contest.

The No.12’s most impactful moment came late in the contest when he set up winger Veresa Mataitini to score the match winning try.

Bronson Tauakipulu – Wests

Despite only entering the contest in the 69th minute, Bronson Tauakipulu was as important to Wests epic victory as any individual.

As one of three new front rowers off the bench, the hooker helped secure the winning penalty try with a massive effort in the final scrum of the game that proved too much for Brothers to handle.

Harry Higgins – Wests

The Wests’ flanker thrived in the trying conditions as his team overcame Brothers.

Higgins crossed for a well-earned five pointer mid-way through the first half that ultimately proved telling in the end result.

The No.6 drove much of Wests’ scrummaging and rolling maul efforts throughout the contest.
