Premier Rugby: Round 10 Wrap Up

This weekend of the Hospital Cup produced important victories for Wests, Brothers, Easts and Souths in a round focused on mental health.

Catch a review of the action below.

GPS 21 V Brothers 30

Brothers secured a vital win against GPS at Yoku Road on Saturday afternoon.

The brethren made the first inroads on the scoreboard as Jaiden Christian muscled his way over the line to keep the Gallopers’ fans silent. GPS swiftly hit back as Tasi Tasi scored yet another try in season 2022 before Tevita Kaitu’u barged over to give the Gallopers a 14-13 halftime lead.

Free-flowing attack was hard to come by in the first half as Tayler Adams’ added two penalty conversions to keep Brothers in touch.

Brendan Bell scored another try from a rolling maul to give Brothers the early second half momentum. GPS soon responded with a rare display of flamboyant rugby that saw Jacob Rabai score in the left corner and give the home side back the lead.

Winger Sam Hyne gave Brothers the ultimate advantage with ten minutes to go when he scored from quick Tayler Adams’ hands.

Brothers are now second on the ladder and face Wests while GPS will play the in-form Easts.

Wests 35 v UQ 14

Wests extended their lead at the top of the table with a win against UQ at Scifleet Stadium on the weekend.

The Bulldog’s dominated the first half proceedings to lead 19-0. Hooker Ethan Dobbins scored a well-deserved double while winger Ilikena Vudogo produced a chip and chase for himself to score.

In typical style UQ captain Pat Morrey scored quickly after half-time in his 100th first grade game to give his side some hope. A Jeral Skelton try soon after dashed UQ’s hope’s as Wests extended their lead.

Cooper Whiteside put the exclamation mark on the contest with a full range interception in the final minute in front of Wests’ home fans.

Wests get their revenge from round one and will face Brothers while UQ will clash with the winless Norths in a potential danger game.

Souths 30 v Norths 21

Souths claimed their second win of the season against Norths at Chipsy Wood Oval despite playing a rescheduled game and losing to Easts on Wednesday night.

Norths made the early statement with a special long range from set piece. Starting in their own half, Norths’ spread the hands until Asher Milne put in a perfectly weighted grubber kick for the speedster Joseph Veramu to run on to and score.

Souths wrestled back the ascendancy in the remainder of the first half through Seb Hanna and Corey Davis tries and led 13-11 at the break.

The elusive Jakob Morrison’s quick tap and go gave Souths the momentum early in the second half. Lukhan Salakaia-Loto steamrolled Norths’ defence off the back of a lineout to ensure a victory for the Magpies.

Souths head into their second bye while Norths will play UQ.

Sunnybank 45 v Easts 47

Easts continued their strong mid-season form with a win against Sunnybank at Biggs Oval on Saturday.

The high scoring affair began with a first half Easts onslaught. The visiting Tigers’ ran in five tries in the opening half to go into the main break leading 33-12. Jake Pappin secured a first half double while Meli Dreu showed his pace to score a superb opening try for Easts.

Tigers’ outside centre Matthew Skipwith-Garland and hooker Richie Asiata added to Sunnybank’s woes quickly after half-time with both securing their second tries’ of the match and stretching the margin to thirty-five points.

Easts fell asleep in the last half-hour of the contest as Sunnybank piled on five unanswered tries. No.13 David Feliuia Lene scored two special five pointers while veteran Rex Tapuai scored from set piece after the final siren to leave the Dragon’s stranded by two points.

Sunnybank’s fightback wasn’t enough but they will look to continue their second half momentum next weekend against Bond while Easts will hope to make it four wins in a row against GPS.
