Premier Rugby: GPS hoping disciplined aggression can help them tame Easts’ pack
By Liam Cook
GPS assistant coach Paul Brown says his side is expecting another tough afternoon when the Gallopers host Easts at Yoku Road on Saturday.
“It’s another big rivalry between Easts and GPS. They are obviously two very proud and very big clubs,” Brown said.
“There will be a big crowd and I think the boys are looking forward to playing at home again. They’ve prepared really well and are obviously under no illusions as to how hard Saturday will be.”
Brown said the GPS forwards will need to be at their best on Saturday, against an impressive Tigers pack led by new coach and former Wallaby Ben Mowen.
“From a playing perspective, Easts are always pretty hard on the ball at the breakdown.”
“They’ve got a few threats across the park and a big forward pack so it’s definitely going to be a physical battle and we wouldn’t expect anything different.”
GPS opened their season with a tight 34-28 victory over rivals Brothers in the opening round.
After leading 19-0 early, Jeeps let Brothers back into the match before holding on to claim a six point win.
“There were a lot of positives that we took out of round one in terms of the way we wanted to play, especially how we started.”
“All in all, I think we were happy with what we got out of the game and we know what we can build on moving into rounds two, three and so on.”
The GPS assistant coach said that fixing his side’s discipline would be a major focus after a heated round one clash.
“For the first game back in the competition it’s always a bit tricky, it’s like two fighters who haven’t been in the ring for a long time and both sides were probably guilty of a bit of rust.”
“The emotion was always going to be high; it was the first time we had played at Crosby for two years and there’s a healthy rivalry there between GPS and Brothers.”
“Our boys just need to be a bit better under pressure and not give those easy outs to opposition teams.”
Brown said the club had also been bolstered ahead of round 2 by news of young fullback Floyd Aubrey’s Queensland Reds debut this Friday night against the Chiefs.
“We’ve been privileged enough down at Yoku Road and across Queensland rugby in general to see what he can do and now we get to see him hopefully get to do it under the bright lights of Suncorp.”
“Everyone at the club is really proud of Floyd”.
