Premier Rugby: Five standout performers from round 2

UQ and GPS claimed their second consecutive wins of the 2022 Premier Rugby season over the weekend, while Brothers bounced back from their week one loss and Bond won their opening match of the season.

We’ve picked five players that caught the eye in round two.

Connor Anderson – Wests

The Bulldogs captain led his side’s second half fightback with two crucial tries against Brothers at Scifleet Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Anderson’s second try was particularly impactful, as he deceived the Brothers defence from the back of a scrum and scored untouched under the posts to bring his side to within a converted try of the visitors.

Josh Collins – GPS

Dubbed by GPS assistant coach Paul Brown as ‘Flash Gordon’, the Gallopers winger set up his teammates for multiple tries and scored two of his own in his sides victory over Easts on Saturday at Yoku Road.

Collins’ posted his contender for try of the year, accelerating past multiple Easts defenders with raw pace and agility to score in the left corner from a run that began inside his own half.

Jake Upfield – Bond

Bond University’s lock was instrumental his side’s first win of the season against Sunnybank at Biggs Oval.

Following an injury interrupted 2021, Upfield began the new season by directing multiple driving mauls that led to tries for fellow forwards Tyrell Kopua and Rhys Sheriff.

Bradley Twidale – UQ

UQ’s flyhalf backed up his impressive round one display with an equally influential second round showing against Norths at St Lucia on Saturday.

Twidale’s kicking game and composed ball play helped UQ cross for seven five pointers, six of which the playmaker converted to ensure the Students made it two from two to open their season.

Mosiah Christian – Brothers

The recruit from UQ was everywhere in Brothers first victory of the year over Wests.

The lively scrumhalf threw a cut out pass to winger set up winger Callum Hicks for Brothers’ second try, before the No.9 added the third five pointer himself in a dominant first half display from the visitors.
