Nudgee & BBC to meet in season defining round two GPS clash
Nudgee will look to avenge last year’s premiership defining loss to Brisbane Boys’ College when the two schools meet again in round two of the 2021 GPS competition.
BBC beat Nudgee 33-22 in the penultimate round of last year’s competition and went on to win their first outright premiership in 66 years.
The two sides, alongside The Southport School, are expected to battle for this year’s title adding further importance to Saturday’s round two clash.
“It’s exciting to play such a big game this early in the season,” Nudgee coach Andrew Scotney said.
“They’re obviously last year’s premiers and they were probably the pace setters through the trials and they’re one of the favourites for the competition so it’s a great opportunity for us.”
Nudgee opening their campaign with an impressive 39-7 victory over Brisbane State High last weekend.
“We started the game really well and scored four really quick tries, which gave us a handy lead,” Scotney said.
“Then after that we gave away a few penalties and State High were able to play their way back into the game but our defence held up really well, which was pleasing.
“I thought our halves were good, Willem Johnstone and Byron Smith, they managed the game really well. Oska Boyd obviously scored four tries which is fantastic considering it was his first game in our first XV.
“Then our forwards were really hard working. Our hooker Oahu Davey-Phillips led from the front and that was good to see.”
BBC were forced to work a little harder for their opening round win, but eventually took the points against a tough Toowoomba Grammar outfit.
Scotney said his team will need to step up to match the defending premiers this weekend.
“There’s elements of last week’s performance that we’d like to replicate but at the same time, BBC are a bit of a different proposition.
“They are probably a bit stronger in certain areas of the game, taking nothing away from State High, but we’ve certainly identified a few key areas where we know we’ll need to be good.”
In other round two action, Gregory Terrace will look to continue their strong start to the season when they host Brisbane State High.
After a round one bye, Churchie begin their campaign against TSS and Brisbane Grammar play Ipswich.
Scotney said he was expecting a number of close encounters throughout round two.
“I wouldn’t say I was surprised by round one but Gregory Terrace would certainly be really happy with their first round win. To go away and beat a good Ipswich Grammar team, it’s a big win for them.
“It looks to be a fairly tight competition. Toowoomba Grammar’s performance against BBC last week looked really solid from what I saw on the video.
“There are definitely a number of teams capable of beating anyone from week to week if you don’t turn up and perform at your best.”
