NSW Waratahs coach Daryl Gibson has named a new look side, featuring a number of Super Rugby rookies for this weekend’s opening trial match against the Brumbies in Mudgee.

After a breakout season in 2016, 22-year old flanker Jack Dempsey will captain the side. Hugh Roach will start at hooker with Parramatta Two Blues forwards David Lolohea and Senio Teleafoa also named in the starting XV.

In the backs, Jake Gordon will get first crack at the Waratahs No.9 jersey and link with former Australian U20s and Queensland flyhalf Mack Mason in the halves. Dave Horwitz and 2016 Catchpole Medal winner Irae Simone will partner one another in the midfield while Harry Jones and Bryce Hegarty will also get a chance to impress the coaching staff from the opening whistle.

Gibson has named an extended 16-man bench which includes Eastwood hooker Damien Fitzpatrick, fullback Andrew Kellaway and former Aussie 7s star Con Foley.

The Waratahs face the Brumbies at Glen Willow Stadium in Mudgee at 6pm on Saturday.
