NSW Waratahs go down to Highlanders in opening trial match

A new look NSW Waratahs side has gone down to the Highlanders 55-29 in a trial match in Queenstown. The Waratahs backs looked sharp in the opening third and new recruit Alex Newsome reaped the rewards, scoring twice in the corner in his first appearance for his new club. The Highlanders hit back through hooker Greg Pleasants-Tate and trailed 10-7 at the first break, before the 2015 Super Rugby champions took control in the second stanza. The home side scored four tries through Josh Ioane, Jackson Hemopo and a double to Rob Thompson to take a commanding 33-10 lead. The Highlanders added four more tries to put the match out of reach before the Waratahs scored three five pointers in the final eight minutes to add some respectability to the scoreline.
