NSW Schools: Inter-Association Trials Week 1 Wrap Up

The 2018 NSW Schoolboy rugby season began officially on Saturday with the opening round of inter-association trials played right across the state.

At Wahroonga, Knox stunned Shore early and scored three first half tries to race away to a 20 point halftime lead.

Shore scored the opening points of the second half and played their way into the match, but weren’t able to overcome an impressive Knox outfit, who added a penalty goal to claim a comfortable 23-7 win.

Newington also started quickly against Oakhill at Stanmore and scored two early tries through Tom Ball to claim a 12-0 lead.

Attacking on the back of a solid platform set by the Newington forwards, the home side added two more tries in the first half, before Oakhill opened their account early in the second half.

While the visitors improved in the second half, they had few answers for Newington’s expansive attack and two more tries saw Newington open their 2018 campaign with 36-7 win.

In arguably the biggest upset of the weekend, Barker scored 19 second half points to beat an experienced Kings outfit.

After leaking an early try, Kings took control and scored four first half tries to take a 22-15 lead to the break.

The home side extended its lead early in the second half before Barker scored back to back tries to level things up at 29-29.

Late in the match, Matt Minogue kicked a long range penalty goal to give Kings a three point lead, but Barker would have the final say.

The visitors worked their way down the field in the final minutes and eventually No.8 Luke Reimer crashed through some tough Kings defence to score the winning try and secure a famous victory.

In other results, Riverview defeated Waverley 33-27, Kinross beat TAS 41-12, Trinity beat St Pat’s 24-0, St Aloysius defeated Grammar 36-3 and Cranbrook were too good for Pius 29-3.
