NSW Schools: GPS Round 1 & CAS Round 2 Wrap Up

Scots, Kings and Joeys opened their GPS campaigns with wins, while Waverley overcame a late scare to join Barker as the only undefeated sides in the CAS competition after two rounds.

At Bellevue Hill, Scots fullback Jack Mossman scored a first half hat trick as his side blew Newington away in the early stages and scored seven first half tries to lead 49-0 at the break.

Newington hit back early in the second half and crossed through No.8 Marcus Della Marta and winger Tom Latu, but the damage had well and truly been done.

Scots hooker Nathan Zylstra and flyhalf Charlie Savala both finished with doubles in the 66-26 round one win.

Joeys also recorded a big victory in round one but were forced to work a lot harder to get their result against Shore.

Joeys jumped out to a 12-0 lead early and looked into control, but Shore muscled up and hit back from close range through Will Cant, before James Harding crossed on the back of a dominant scrum to level the scores as 12-12 at half time.

Unfortunately for Shore fans though, it was one way traffic from that point on. After regaining the lead, the Joeys attack clicked and with clean ball, the visitors were devastating.

Halfback Nicholas Murray finished with a well deserved double, as Joeys ran in six second half tries to claim a 48-17 win.

Elsewhere, Kings opened their season with a 34-22 win over Riverview at Parramatta.

Cenre Viliami Penisini claimed a double, while 15-year old Joseph Suaalii also scored and earned a spot in the GPS first XV to play this week.

On the second weekend of CAS action, Waverley were forced to play the entire 80 minutes to earn their victory over an impressive St Aloysius’ side.

After a physical opening, Waverley No.8 Luca Moretti opened the scoring for his side but the Aloys’ backs quickly hit back and scored off an impressive set piece play from inside their own half.

Waverley dominated possession and territory for the remainder of the first half but couldn’t find their way through a stubborn Aloys’ defensive line, until some impressive counter attack created space for Waverley winger Pheonix Baldwin to score and give his side a 14-5 lead at the break.

The Waverley front row combined early in the second half to extend the lead, but Aloys quickly responded on the back of a Waverley mistake to reduce the deficit to just seven points.

Waverley added a penalty goal soon after to take a 22-12 lead, but Aloys swung momentum back in their favour with some impressive tactical kicking and barged over from close range to give their fans hope of an unlikely upset.

The big Waverley forwards looked to take control in the closing stages and although initially Aloys’ had the answers, a penalty saw the Double V capitalise and claim an eight point buffer.

Aloys set up a grand stand finish when they scored their fourth try of the afternoon and converted to take the score to 25-24, but came up short in their last ditch attempt to steal victory, as Waverley held on for a nervy one-point victory.

Elsewhere, Barker also survived a scare and were forced to fight back from 17-7 down to claim a 35-22 victory over an impressive Trinity side that seemed to run out of puff late in the match.

Barker hooker Billy Pollard scored early in the second half, then set up another try shortly after to help his side regain the lead for the first time since early in the match.

The Barker forwards then took control and on the back of a dominant scrum, scored twice more through Ben Bryden and Luke Reimer to claim a hard fought 13-point victory.

At Wahroonga, Cranbrook bounced back from a disappointing round one performed to beat Knox 27-17 and claim their first win of the 2018 season.
